We are members of AAUW at the national, state, and branch level. Although the national bylaws identify the organization as the American Association of University Women (hereafter known as AAUW), we are urged to use AAUW whenever possible. The name “American Association of University Women,” first of all, is a mouthful, and the name has not been generally understood. Participants in a focus group thought that we were women faculty members at a university or that we were the wives of faculty members. The state organization is property identified as AAUW of Tennessee, and the branch as AAUW Maryville Branch. Since we have a “branch whacker” we know not to use the term “chapter.” Correct names and consistent names give us identify, as well as professionalism. There is an AAUW Style Guide, available on the web site, which we should follow in publications.
