11th Annual Blount County Summit

Thursday, November 3, 2011
 Maryville College
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

bulletAn all-day summit to explore issues girls identify as adversely affecting their lives and learning.
bulletBrings together 75-100 girls from grades 7-12 from all school systems and the home-schooled within Blount County.
bulletTopics for the discussion groups are chosen from answers the girls provide to specific questions on the registration form, such as "What do you think are the 3-5 most important issues or struggles facing teens today?".
bulletGirls can register by completing a registration form, available here or in their guidance office. The deadline for registration is October 17.
bulletAfter concerns are identified, girls will articulate the messages they want to convey, the services they need, and the changes they want to make. Girls are given opportunities to develop their own ideas for concrete solutions as they work in small groups of 10 or less, with facilitators trained in dealing with sensitive issues. At the end of the day, the girls vote on an Action Plan.
bulletEncourages girls to strengthen their voices, sister to sister. By sharing experiences with each other, research shows that girls gain confidence to support each other, change risky behaviors, and establish new goals and dreams.
bulletTrained professionals, such as licensed clinical social workers, school nurses, guidance counselors, child welfare advocates, college professors, school administrators, teachers, parents, and several of the girls themselves are involved in the planning process.
bulletLunch is provided.
