education at Lincoln Memorial University, was inducted to the UTK
Educators Hall of Honor.
Vandy Kemp, vice president
and dean of students, was named Outstanding Administrator at
Maryville College
Congratulations to Christy
Walsh on being named the executive director for The Gate-Gateway to
Independence. The Gate is a nonprofit organization in Blount County
for young adults (after high school) with disabilities.
Thanks to all who
participated in our successful eighth Annual
Sister-to-Sister Summit, Nov. 6, 2008, and particularly the Co-chairs
Kathie Shiba and Vandy Kemp, who partnered with the Center for Strong Communities at Maryville
College. Special thanks also to
Rebecca Durbin and Malinda Taylor for planning the
program. Durbin also served as
MC for both.
Charlotte Crawford, was appointed to the
AAUW Organizational Structure and
Governance Task Force. The TF presented a written report
with research, data and recommendations for a relevant
organizational structure and governance implications (including
revisions to current bylaws, policies, procedures, working rules)
Thanks to Rebecca Vial for
establishing a partnership with administrators of Pellissippi State
Technical Community College.

The 2006 Sister-to-Sister Summit
was awarded $500 from WalMart
Maryville was one of
12 in the country chosen to display at the "Taste of
Success" exhibit at the 2003 National Convention.
The
Knoxville Branch was also selected for their ongoing annual SHADES (SHaring
ADventures in Engineering and Science) workshop
for girls in middle school.

The Women's Equity Foundation
was awarded a $2,000 Community Enhancement Grant for
2008-09 from the state of Tennessee.
Wendy Pitts Reeves announced at the
Sept. 29, 2005, Sister-to-Sister meeting that she had entered a contest
for America’s Promise, writing about S2S, and had been awarded $1000
through Community Promise. Congratulations, Wendy!!
Maryville
received $1,000 "Sisters in Action" award for 2003-2004 This reward was quite a surprise,
since National already gave us money in 2001 (see below). We had not expected a repeat. The award
is further affirmation that what we are doing is important not only to us,
but recognized at the national level.
Maryville received a "Sisters
in Action" grant of
$2,500 from AAUW for our 1st-ever Sister-to-Sister Summit in
2001. We were one of 8 branches around the country to be selected,
and the 1st branch in Tennessee to hold a summit.
2009 National AAUW
Convention
The 2009 AAUW
National Convention was held in St. Louis, June 26-28. Highlights included:
Restructured AAUW as a 50l(c)3
organization—with the AAUW Action Fund for lobbying efforts as a
smaller 50l(c)4 entity.
Eliminated regions and replace
them with a Leadership Corps.
Elected Carolyn Garfein as
President and Gail Nordmoe as Vice-President
Passed one member, one vote
