Branch Awards

bulletCongratulations to Christy Walsh on being named the executive director for The Gate-Gateway to Independence. The Gate is a nonprofit organization in Blount County for young adults (after high school) with disabilities.
bulletPrize for Membership Recruitment: Christy Walsh, Program VP, is encouraging all branch members to bring potential members to the general meetings as the Member-Get-a-Member continues. Prizes will be awarded for the person recruiting the most new members.
bulletThanks to all who participated in our successful eighth Annual Sister-to-Sister Summit, Nov. 6, 2008, and particularly the Co-chairs Kathie Shiba and Vandy Kemp, who partnered with the Center for Strong Communities at Maryville College. Special thanks also to Rebecca Durbin and Malinda Taylor for planning the program. Durbin also served as MC for both.
bulletCharlotte Crawford, was appointed to the AAUW Organizational Structure and Governance Task Force. The TF presented a written report with research, data and recommendations for a relevant organizational structure and governance implications (including revisions to current bylaws, policies, procedures, working rules)

bulletCongratulations to Wendy Pitts Reeves on her successful election to the Blount County Commission.

bulletMaryville was one of 12 in the country chosen to display at the "Taste of Success" exhibit at the 2003 National Convention. The Knoxville Branch was also selected for their ongoing annual SHADES (SHaring ADventures in Engineering and Science) workshop for girls in middle school.
bulletAwakening a Sleeping Giant - Maryville is one of three branches featured on the AAUW website under Member Center, Branches and States, Branch Revival Stories - Back from the Brink
bulletOur branch was featured on the national website as one of eight branches in the country under "Sisters in Action, Promising Practices" --  Strategy #3: Ensuring the Involvement of School Personnel and Other Adults in Summit Follow Up

 

bulletThe Women's Equity Foundation was awarded a $2,000 Community Enhancement Grant for 2008-09 from the state of Tennessee.
bulletWendy Pitts Reeves announced at the Sept. 29, 2005, Sister-to-Sister meeting that she had entered a contest for America’s Promise, writing about S2S, and had been awarded $1000 through Community Promise. Congratulations, Wendy!!
bulletMaryville received $1,000 "Sisters in Action" award for 2003-2004
This reward was quite a surprise, since National already gave us money in 2001 (see below). We had not expected a repeat. The award is further affirmation that what we are doing is important not only to us, but recognized at the national level.
bulletMaryville received a "Sisters in Action" grant of $2,500 from AAUW for our 1st-ever Sister-to-Sister Summit in 2001. We were one of 8 branches around the country to be selected, and the 1st branch in Tennessee to hold a summit.

2007 National AAUW Convention

The 2007 AAUW National Convention was held in Phoenix, June 29-July 3. Highlights included:
bullet AAUW voted to restructure the organization by combining many assets and activities of the Educational Foundation with AAUW.
bullet The 35th anniversary of Title IX was celebrated.
bullet The Legal Advocacy Fund celebrated its 25th anniversary with an Awards Dinner. Clara Bingham and Laura Leedy Gansler received Speaking Out for Justice Awards.
bullet Mae Jemison highlighted the AAUW Foundation Night Banquet as recipient of the 2007 Achievement Award.
