Asked Questions
What is Aikido? - See Aikido information.
What is the class like? - See Instruction
Why study Aikido? - Aikido offers practical self-defense, but more importantly, it teaches self-improvement. Aikido is more than the study of physical techniques; proper etiquette, attitude and behavior are also emphasized. Throwing and being thrown are stressed equally. Your partner is not an opponent, but an assistant; you acquire the technique by being thrown and practice the technique by throwing others. Aikido not only improves physical conditioning but stamina, balance, flexibility, coordination, strength, resilience, self-confidence, concentration, alertness and concern for others are also improved.
How does rank work in Aikido? - Students attend classes and accumulate hours of practice toward eligibility for testing for rank. Ranks are determined through a nationally standardized set of examinations, which are held periodically. There are five lower ranks called kyu, followed by black ranks called dan. A black belt indicates not an expert, but rather a senior student. All students practice the same techniques in class, with junior and senior students practicing together. The higher the rank of student, the more responsibility he or she has to junior class members and to the dojo as a whole.
