Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to practice Aikido?  -  Knoxville Aikikai is a not for profit organization but even not for profit organizations need to pay rent.  We are currently asking each student to contribute $50.00 each month to help offset the cost of rent.  Also each student is required to pay their annual MAF dues ($30.00 a year for beginners).  Other expenses may include the cost of gi (uniforms) and optional weapons.

Am I required to buy uniforms and weapons?  -  As a beginner of Aikido you are not require to buy a uniform or gi until you feel committed to Aikido.  Many beginners start practicing in sweats or jogging attire.  You are required, though, to have a proper uniform if you wish to attend a formal seminar.  Also you are not required to buy weapons at any time; there are usually enough weapons in class for everyone.

What is the uniform like and what does it cost?  -  Proper uniforms differ slightly between men and women and senior students.  For men of kyu ranks (beginner) the uniform is called a gi which is comprised of pants, a belt and a heavy top (all white or off white).  For men of dan ranks (black belt) and women of all ranks the uniform is comprised of the same gi but also includes a hakama which are a second baggy pair of pants (usually black) that are worn over the gi pants.  The cost of gi range from $25 to $45 depending on size.  Hakama are a bit more expensive with a greater range depending on quality.
