Guidance For Coaches & Referees
|
Jewelry worn in the hair, around the neck or on hands presents a hazard when players
are actively engaged in playing. NO JEWELRY IS TO BE WORN BY PLAYERS DURING
GAMES OR PRACTICES.This includes, but is not limited to, rings,
bracelets, necklaces, brads or beads in hair (even beads that are braided or woven into hair, such
as "cornrows", "tassils" or whatever the current name is), or pins
of any kind. When doubt, coaches should just say no. Please inform parents of this
prior to practices or games.
This restriction also applies to tournaments, in or out of the region.
|
Each team needs two coaches both of which must be certified at or above the
level of the team they are coaching. Both coaches must complete the Safe Haven
course. And both coaches should have a copy of the player registration forms
for the season. The copy should be resigned to have an original signature by
one of the parents. This is an insurance requirement in case of an injury and
provides release for the coach to take action if the parent is not present.
This is also becoming a requirement for many tournaments and tournament
officials are becoming stricter about checking coach certifications in the
National database.

The national AYSO policy does not allow for coaches or players to request to be on a
specific team. The only pairing allowed is for coaches with their children
(or nieces/nephews) and siblings if they are close to the same age. The other
type request that we try to honor is for a practice night or not to practice on a particular
night. Social interaction is important to children's growth and soccer provides
a relaxed and informal way to develop those skills. Note that many children
make new friends through soccer that they keep through high school and beyond.
For each Spring season we do make an effort to keep the teams together from the
Fall. Some exceptions occur when the whole team doesn't return or the coach
doesn't return. Then the team may be combined with another team in the same
situation, or the players may be split among multiple teams. New players
coming in will be placed on teams at the discretion of a committee appointed by
the commissioner.
For each Fall season all players go back into the general pool and coaches
participate in an organized draft with oversight by the regional board. Some
trading does occur after this draft, but only if both coaches agree and it is
sanctioned by the AYSO coordinator for that division. An instance of this
would be if a player didn't specify a practice night conflict on the registration
form and got assigned to a coach that was practicing on that night.
The reason that prompted these rules occurred many seasons ago, but without them
there is no way to prevent the problem from occurring. AYSO has five tenants in
its philosophy. One of these is "Balanced Teams". We try to ensure that games
played are fun and that the outcome of games will be even. It is not fun
when games are 8-0. We will do what is possible during team formation to prevent
this. Many seasons ago coaches had no restrictions and would request players for
car-pooling reasons or friends that wanted to stay together. This environment
resulted in stacked teams where coaches pulled together all the most skilled
players that were as good as or better than Club teams in the area. But the
result was they beat all other teams heavily and on a consistent basis.
This was not good for either side since the players that lost badly had no fun,
and the players that won had no challenge to improve their skills. The coaches
for the winning team even had the additional chore to prevent taunting and other
unsportsmanlike conduct since these players were still young and had not learned
to deal with ego yet.
But there is benefit to having highly skilled players play together as well as
against each other. For more information about the Avanced Training Program, read on

To allow for all the exceptional players to play together as well as those who
have a keen interest in bettering their skills we have instituted the Advanced
Training Program (ATP). Any player can join regardless of skill, but they have to be
committed to learning soccer. No missing practice, no disruption of practice,
and complete attention to the coach. They can be asked to leave if they don’t
follow these guidelines. Players must still participate on the regular AYSO team
for practices and games to join ATP.
The only restrictions are on age. Since AYSO is about fun we don't start to
stress aggressive competition in the early years. ATP is for players starting
at the second year of U10 eligibility and through the two U14 years. ATP girls
are in the Spring and ATP boys are in the Fall to avoid conflicts with area
Middle School and High School soccer. Teams will play on Sunday afternoons
against other AYSO regions that have similar programs or against area club teams
if the Regional Commissioner approves the game. There is no set schedule so the
coach or a volunteer from the players’ parents organizes games throughout the
season.
Coaches for ATP must:
- be certified at the intermediate or advanced level
- be approved by the Regional Coach Administrator
- without exception, be aware of and follow all AYSO rules with the team
Though these teams are better than many area club teams, they will not be coached
with the same purpose and objectives. Winning is not the goal – fun is still
emphasized first but now with greater ability to increase soccer skills. No
players sit the bench. All players that ask to join will be accepted provided
they meet the commitment asked for.
ATP coaches for each season will determine the practice night. Usually these
training sessions run a little longer than the regular team’s session. If the
ATP practice night is in conflict with the regular team night then notify the
regular coach and work out a compromise. Typically players evenly split their
time between the two practices and coaches are aware of this.
