David Baldwin is living proof...
Always be prepared

David Baldwin is always prepared. Linda Baldwin started her day like any other day last Monday: she got up, got some breakfast and ate it while she waited for her children to wake up.

Her children are home schooled and their day was not yet ready to start, and Baldwin was enjoying the solitude and quiet of an early morning breakfast.

But then something happened - she started choking on her cereal.

"I couldn't get air, and I couldn't dislodge the cereal," she recalled. "I thought if I could get to the phone and dial 911 - I couldn't speak, but at least someone would know the address and maybe help would arrive."

Linda Baldwin can relax now. Her son, 12-year-old David, used the Heimlich maneuver he learned in Boy Scouts to save her life Monday when his mother choked on breakfast cereal.
The Baldwins live on Pine Ridge Lane,
off East Wolf Valley Road. Not remote, but still a few minutes from the nearest emergency help.

Her children - Brittany, 13; David, 12; and William, 8 - were still asleep.

"When I realized what was happing I though, 'Oh gosh, I'm going to die in front of my children.' Then David came along," she said.

David is her 12-year-old son.

He's also a Boy Scout.

He just happened to wake up and just happened to be walking toward the living room, where his mother was going to get the phone.

"I saw her holding her hand to her chest and she was making a coughing sound," David said. "I just walked up behind her and started the Heimlich maneuver."

David is part of Troop 129 in Oak Ridge. He said he learned how to do the Heimlich last year.

"I was going for the phone and then there he was, putting his arms around me from behind. I didn't hear him at all. He was as quiet as a mouse," Baldwin said.

David said he's glad he was there, but acts as if saving his mother's life is nothing out of the ordinary.

After all, he's a Boy Scout. He's always prepared.
