Canoeing is one of the many activities enjoyed by members of Boy Scout Troop 129. In this canoe are Larry Blair, assistant scout master, Mark Woodson and Steve Cappiello.
Boy Scout Troop 129, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge, will have an open house for current and prospective members and their families on Monday beginning at 7. It will be held in the fellowship hall of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Lafayette Drive.
The troop invites all boys who are either at least 11 years old or in the sixth grade to come and visit that night to see what activities the troop does throughout the year.
The highlight of last year was a 57-mile canoe trip down the Shenandoah River in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The troop toured historic sites in the valley on the return trip home. A special slide presentation of the trip will be shown at the open house.
The troop is involved in many aspects of outdoor adventure plus providing various services for the community. Closely associated with the troop is Post 129 for boys 16 to 21. They conduct their own functions and projects as well as with the troop.
To help fund activities and provide community serivce, the troop began last year a continuing paper recycle project. The troop will collect old paper every Monday night from about 6:30 to 9 at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church where it meets. The purpose of the project is to widen the recycle service in Oak Ridge, not to compete with other groups offering such services.
For leadership and character development, together with outdoor fun and activity, members of Troop 129 ask boys to join them.
