Purpose:
Troop 129 firmly believes that a Scout on the Trail to Eagle should not be simply a "warm body" in a position of leadership. The Scout should develop and enhance his leadership skills as he progresses on his way up that Trail. This Report encourages all First Class and above Scouts to review their actions during the past month and to begin to see how their leadership skills are growing and developing.
Requirements:
To achieve a "leadership month" for advancement to Star, Life or Eagle, a Scout in Troop 129 must:
* Be at least a First Class Scout
* Be assigned to a position of leadership within the Troop
* Attend all monthly meetings for the month in question (loyal, trustworthy). One excused absence is accepted. To be excused, the Scout must notify someone ahead of time and must arrange for another Scout to take over his duties.
* Be in full uniform as required for meetings and outings (obedient, brave - be a good role model)
* Attend the monthly outing for the month in question (loyal). If the outing is cancelled due to weather, this requirement may be excused.
* Submit a Monthly Leadership Report (trustworthy, cheerful, obedient), detailing at least three (3) acts of leadership that were performed during that month. These acts may be done at meetings, on outings, or at special events that occurred during that month. The Report will also include a space for the Scout to list one behavior or attitude that he'd like to improve in the future.
The scouts should try to find a variety of activities that help him demonstrate leadership, and not simply include the same activities for all reports. The focus should be on "developing" and "improving", not on simply "sustaining."
Examples:
"Helped new Scouts" -- IS NOT an acceptable activity.
"Helped new Scouts practice their Oath and Law for advancement" -- IS acceptable.
"Set a good example" -- IS NOT an acceptable activity.
"Set a good example by organizing my patrol and directing a litter hike" -- IS acceptable.
Scouts should make an effort to turn in a report each month in which they qualify. Late reports will be considered, but keep in mind that it's hard to remember details when several months have passed!
Other examples:
- supervised young Scouts learning to cook on the outing
- directed Cub Scouts at the Scout Show on how to make fire with flint and steel
- helped a young Scout who was afraid during a lightning storm
- taught knots to Webelos during the Rappel-O-Ree
- led patrol discussion about what merit badges we want to work on
- introduced a new Scout to the patrol and explained our procedures
- kept good patrol records of those in full uniform and who's going on outings (this requires leadership in that the Scout may have to ask boys for further information; he's demonstrating his own organization and concern for the group)
- ensured that all my patrol's equipment was loaded onto the bus, and that it was returned in good condition (this often requires asking others for assistance, and making sure it gets done)
Some other "action" words to stimulate your thinking - see what you have been able to do as a leader this last month?!
