Citizens Against the Pellissippi Parkway Extension

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the planned route of the Pellissippi Parkway Extension?

The planned route of the highway is from Alcoa Hwy (US 129) to East Lamar Alexander Pkwy (US 321). CAPPE is opposed to the section from Old Knoxville Hwy (SR 33) to East Lamar Alexander Pkwy. Construction has not begun on this section. (see map for entire southern loop).

Why do so many citizens oppose the construction of the remaining section of the highway?

The proposed highway will take farmland out of production, bring noise and air pollution, create surface run-off and urban sprawl. Traffic from the highway will place additional pressure on secondary roads which are already in need of improvement. This highway contradicts what Blount County residents have said they want for the future - to preserve the rural character of our county. Read more about our concerns.

Is this road needed?

NO! We already have a four lane road from Alcoa Highway to Townsend. Recent traffic counts do not show a need for a new interstate highway through the eastern part of Blount County.

Can we really stop the construction of this highway and the destruction of the rural character of our county?

Yes we can! The affected landowners and business owners have not yet been forced to sell their land. Even if this happens, we will fight the interstate in court!

What is the alternative?

CAPPE urges our elected representatives to focus on improving and maintaining our existing road system. We also urge them to observe the Blount County Planning Guidelines, which call for preserving farmland and designing development that fits into the rural character of the county.
