FTP
FTP stands for "file transfer protocol."
This refers to how to get your web page placed on the KORRnet server. Your
page is a file (or, more likely several files) that must be transferred
to the computer (file server) at KORRnet in order for anyone to see it.
The easiest way that I know to do this is with a program designed to handle
file transfers. Two come to mind, and I use them both. If you are a Mac
user, you need to get Fetch. If you have a PC, get WS_FTP.
You'll find a detailed page of instructions
for using WS_FTP on this site . . . it's what I have been using to upload
these pages. Brief directions are below. More details are in the Generic
Templates: see FTP
You can download these programs, and use
them for free.
Fetch
http://fetchsoftworks.com/Features
Fetch is for use on Macintosh computers and is free for students or employees of a school or university or volunteers or employees of a tax exempt charity. The link above will take you to a page where you can find the program and all the
instruction you will likely need to transfer your web pages to KORRnet.
WS_FTP

When you get to the Ipswitch home page,
click on Downloads at the top of the page. Scroll down and choose WS_FTP LE. Choose the
Download the WS_FTP LE option and enter your email address to download your new FTP program. Notice on the page there is information
about licensing and a link to tutorials.
A note: you'll need to be able
to unzip the file you download so that you can install it. Please see my notes
on unzipping files at the bottom of the preliminaries page.
Using FTP
To use your FTP program you need to tell
it how to connect to KORRnet. This is where your username and password
come in. Generally, FTP programs need the following information:
| username: |
chic (that's what I use for this site) |
| password: |
whatever your password is |
| host name: |
korrnet.org (the korrnet server) |
| host type: |
unix standard (I usually set it to automatically
detect) |
WS_FTP works a lot like Windows Explorer.
That is, it has left and right panes that show you files. The left pane
shows files on your computer, and the right pane shows what's on the KORRnet
server. To transfer files, you highlight whatever you want in either pane
an click the arrow button to send. Here's an example where I sent an update
of this page to this site:
I'll put in an example for Fetch when I
can get a picture for it. The Fetch site has most of the information you
will need.
