About This Template
I set this template up as a table with four rows and two columns.
"Open this page in an HTML editor. Then . . ."
I sent out a preliminary version of this site for review with the statement above put in early on . . . Thanks to Dr. Whitney at UT for pointing out that most won't know what an "HTML editor" is!

If you are interested, each semester Dr. Whitney's Information Network Applications class works with nonprofit organizations to develop websites on KORRnet

Please read on . . . making this page isn't really difficult.

First of all, HTML is the language, or code, of which web pages are made, and an HTML editor is allows you to create and edit the code that makes a web page. HTML means Hyper Text Markup Language, or simply, hypertext. What makes hypertext different than regular text is that it features the ability to create links that allow a reader to move about within a document or to another document. For example, I used an HTML editor to make this bold text into a link. To demonstrate, use your mouse to click the link in the last sentence (the underlined, bold text). You can use pictures or text as links to allow your readers to go to any part of your website or to another website.

The kind of HTML editor I have in mind is like a word processor for web pages. In fact, most newer word processors, such as Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect, feature the ability to create and edit hypertext. To make the pages on this site I used a free HTML editor, called Composer, that comes with the Netscape web browser.

The Notes below tell you how to get Composer and how to use it.
Other HTML editors, both free and for sale, are discussed briefly on the page about editors

As soon as you have an editor of some kind . . .

Open this page in an HTML editor (In Composer, click File on the menu bar, then click Open Page.). Then, use the "save as" command to save this page as any page you want. Then modify this text and delete or add anything to customize your new page. I also included a blank template, without any instructional text,  that you can open and modify:

Please refer to the Notes below for more extensive, step by step, instructions on how this page was put together.

If you have any questions about how to use the information on this website, or if you want to make suggestions or offer comments, please email me, ssharp@korrnet.org or, if you don't have email use the Comment Form that goes along with this template.

More Help
Also, I have created a website with a good bit of information on how to make web pages on KORRnet at:
http://www.korrnet.org/chic
When you go to any of the links on the left, you'll see how I modified each page from a copy of this one to suit what that page's content will be. I tried to include content on each of these template pages that will help you modify them to your needs.

Please look below this text to see the elements used on the pages of this site.

Forms

I also included all the tags for an online form so that you can use pop up menus and other items on your site. The forms may be used to get feedback from the visitors to your website. I put a link to a generic form on the Contact page.

Notes - Instructions on how to make this page from scratch
To use this page as a template for your own web pages (i.e., not from scratch), open this page in an editor, such as Netscape's Composer (see below for instructions on how to get Composer free). Then, delete everything from the horizontal line above, including the line, on down the page.  Then click File and select Save As... to save this template with another name. You can then reopen this template (template.html) to read the instructions or copy and paste elements from this page to your new page.

Also included is a blank template, without any instructional text,  that you can open and modify:

Blank Template
Be sure to add ".html" to the end of your new page's filename. For example, if I save this template to make a calendar page, I'd click File, select Save As..., and name the new page "calendar.html."
Attention Mac users: Everywhere that you see the phrase "right click," you can get the same result by holding down the mouse button for a few seconds. Since I don't always use a Mac, please let me know if you learn any secrets that I should share with everyone (ssharp@korrnet.org - Or, if you don't have email use the Comment Form.).

Getting a Copy of Netscape's Composer Program
This page, and all the pages on this site were made with Netscape's Composer. Composer is a free web page editor that comes with the Netscape browser. All the notes on this site are assuming that you are using this editor. It is likely that the information will also be useful for those using other editors. Most of the organizations that I work with do not have the funds to purchase web page editors. I chose to use Composer because it is free, and it does a good job. I decided to use it to make these pages so that you can see how easy it is to do good work cheaply.

Go to Netscape's home page to get your own copy of Composer.

http://home.netscape.com/
Once you get there, click on the Download icon Download Netscape  at the top left part of the page. You'll see instructions for how to get your copy from there. Contact me if you have trouble. (ssharp@korrnet.org - Or, if you don't have email use the Comment Form.)
Editing this Page
To open this page in Composer, click File and select  Edit Page. Now you can make changes to this page to suit how you want your site to look.

To explain how to make your own version of this page from scratch, I'll start at the top of this page and work my way down, explaining how I set this up.

The instructions for how to make this page got pretty long by the time I got through making all the notes. So, I divided it up into several separate pages that you can access via the index below. I repeated the index below on all subsequent pages so that you can jump from link to link at will.

Note that I used this template page to generate all of these new pages (that was a word of encouragement . . . you can do this too!).
