The Chota Canoe Club kayak touring group is an opportunity for paddlers of all levels to get out on the water and enjoy the sport. Group members plan and lead trips that range from easy river float trips for rec boats, to coastal expeditions for experienced sea kayakers. We also participate in regularly scheduled events such as Thursday evening paddles on the Knoxville waterfront, and the, “Paddle to the Grill”, trips on summer evenings. The group goals are for paddlers to have fun, be safe and expand their paddling skills and opportunities. We introduce people to the sport, learn from each other and take some really fun trips. Safety is always a priority on every paddling trip. A key event every year is the Chota Canoe School. This weekend long learning experience is an opportunity for beginner and intermediate paddlers to learn basic and advanced skills, rescue training and trip planning from ACA certified instructors. Paddling trips range in difficulty from easy to advanced. On a typical weekend trip a group of paddlers will get together for a casual paddle on an area lake. More ambitious groups may take a weekend kayak camping trip to Fontana Lake or some other remote location. The group has taken advanced trips to Vancouver Island, the coasts of Maine, Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Isle Royale in Lake Superior. Another important aspect of the group is to participate and volunteer in community outdoor events. We also contribute to local and regional conservation organizations. Join our group and get out on the water in a kayak for fun, exercise, fellowship and adventure.
