CVNA BOARD MEETING

June 17, 2003

In attendance: John Bevis, Brian Mischley, Joe Harrison, Sharon Webb, John Brown, Sandy Ammons, and Terry Caruthers

John Bevis:

Reminded the Board of the Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale’s Neighborhood Night scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003 at the Bonny Kate Branch Library. Terry Caruthers indicated she was attending to speak about the proposed new South Knoxville Branch Library. Sandy Ammons also indicated that she would possibly be attending.

Had talked to the Purple District Board Members who indicated they would come to the June 12, 2003 meeting. They did not show up. Reminded that elections are to be held in August and we will need to seek new representatives for this group.

Meeting announcement signs? Sandy Ammons reported on the present locations: Mapleloop & Magazine, South Knoxville Church of God, Royal Heights & Stone, Judith & Chapman, Lake Forest & Chapman, Redbud & Sarvis, Sarvis & Mapleloop, Brandau & Mapleloop, Arcadia & Colonial, and Arcadia & Hamilton. This met with much discussion on where best to locate signs. New locations were assigned and plotted on the CVNA map for next month’s meeting.

A Historic Neighborhood Forum Survey Form from Knox Heritage was discussed and completed.

Elections? Will be held in August. Discussed which would be more effective, mailing or flyers. Also discussed proposal of current slate of officers and board being retained for the following year. Had no quorum to vote on these issues. This brought up the question whether dues run fiscal year or annual. Sandy Ammons announced they run annually. Discussion ensued on how to entice new members and the renewal of memberships. Sandy volunteered to draft a letter with an election ballot to include with renewal reminders. Ballot should include a list of the meetings. A notice will be sent to the South Knoxville Times Packet about the upcoming election.

Picnic June 21, 2003? A letter requesting permission to use the park was sent. Weather predictions appear to be good for that day. Will extend invitations to the South Knoxville County Commissioners, Howard Pinkston and Larry Clark. Discussion followed over the flyer wording that could indicate food was being provided. Decision was made to bring hot dogs, buns, and chili in addition to the covered dishes provided by the community.

Future programs? Ideas discussed included State Representative Jamie Hagood, but it was decided we need to move to more non-political programs. Other suggestions were Columist and Speaker Sam Venable, new Knox County Public Library Director Larry Frank, Mooreland Heights Principal Robbie McGowan, McClung Collection Manager Steve Cotham, East Tennessee Historical Society’s Shane Rhyne, the Mended Hearts Group, and Rick Boling. Musical program suggestions included the South Doyle High Madrigals and the Jazz Group.

July meeting? Decided to focus on upcoming CVNA Election and have an open forum on community issues the CVNA members would like to see addressed.

Sandy Ammons:

Announced we had acquired 4 new members.

Expressed the idea that the CVNA adopt Mooreland Heights School. Discussed the school’s need of volunteers, school supplies, and mentors.

Meeting adjourned.

Minutes taken and prepared by Terry Caruthers in Carol Cook’s absence.
