ONE NATION BY CONVICTION (ONBC)

ONBC creates and submits legislation pertaining to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Our mission is to bring awareness to the injustice affecting the community within the Federal Judicial System, and mobilize family, friends, ex-felons, and taxpayers as one, in an effort to demand fairness, and just punishment. ONBC hopes to challenge the federal board of prison’s suspicious actions from a social justice perspective.

Mainly, ONBC will lobby to re-enactment Federal Parole in a system that has engulfed tens of thousands of non-violent offenders since its abolishment in 1984. In addition, ONBC intends to address other issues pertaining to criminal justice such as: improving facility conditions, amending visitation and correspondence rights of citizens, as well as other concerns from members and the community of federal inmates.

There is a national concern and campaigns around the country addressing to amend sentencing guidelines in federal courts such as challenging stiffer penalties for suspects charged with crack cocaine verses powder cocaine. There is an injustice when there is a disproportion of person of color being charged with crack cocaine and sentence for longer jail time than those white suspects charged with powder, but still cocaine, more often than not, serving less time. Therefore, ONBC will lobby for change in the two decade old Crack and Powder Cocaine sentencing disparity in which 5 grams of Crack Cocaine is equivalent to 500 grams of Powder Cocaine. According to an ACLU study 2006, it revealed that 80% of Crack Cocaine defendants were African-American.

ONBC board members include:

Maurice L. Clark, President
Tracy Herman, Secretary
Carolyn Bishop, Treasurer
