Who is Jesus?
Around the year 0 (give or take a few years) God humbled himself to be born of the virgin Mary. This Son of God was Jesus. Through his life on earth, his death on the cross and resurrection, Jesus broke through the wall of sin that separated us from our Creator. Through faith in Jesus, we receive God's grace and the greatest gift of all: eternal life in Heaven. This belief is central to all Christians!
What is a Lutheran?
In east Tennessee we get asked that question more than you can imagine. Lutherans were the first to break away from the Roman Catholic Church in the sixteenth century. Martin Luther was an Augustinian monk who wrote about the essentials of the Christian faith. It comes down to three basic phrases: Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone.
Grace alone
There is a great way to remember what grace is about. G.R.A.C.E: God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. It is only through this free gift of God that we are saved from hell because of our sins. All because of grace heaven has been earned for us by Christ.
Faith alone
By His suffering and death in the place of all people, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Everyone who believes this good news has the eternal life that it offers. God through the work of the Holy Spirit creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him.
Scripture alone
The Bible is God's inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals our sin through the Law and our forgiveness through the Gospel. It is the only source of the gracious good news of Jesus Christ.
What does "Synod" mean?
The word "Synod" in The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod comes from Greek words that mean "walking together." The term has rich meaning in our church body, because congregations voluntarily choose to belong to the Synod. These congregations have a shared confession of Jesus Christ as taught in Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions which they believe are the correct interpretation and presentation of Biblical doctrine. |
