Here's how to figure out which political district you live in and therefore which candidates you will see on your ballot. Usually it's best to confirm your district by using several of these checks.
- Check your voter registration card.
Your polling place and districts are listed on the front of the card. If there have been changes since your card was issued, then the Election Commission should inform you in writing. (If you have moved since the card was issued, your card may not be accurate.)
- Who represents you now?
If you know who represents you now, a quick visit to the website of the city, county or state legislature will match incumbents with district number. The League of Women Voters publishes a directory of elected officials and an abridged version is on their website.
The League's website is: www.korrnet.org/lwv/kygo.htm
- Was your Ward shifted to a new district during recent redistricting?
Some Wards were switched to new districts when district boundaries were redrawn in the spring of 2001. If you ward shifted, the Election Commision informed you in writing.
- Check the Geographic Information Service website (www.kgis.org).
Requires Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. From the home page menu bar choose Online maps, then choose Voting Precinct Search, then type in your address.
- Whose political signs do you see in your neighborhood?
Check out the candidate signs in your neighbors' yards. Then go to Candidates & Issues to find out which district the candidate is running in.
- Where is your polling place?
Find your polling place on the list of Voting Wards. (A ward is the same thing as a precinct.) You can then locate all of the political districts in which that ward is located, including City Council, County Commission, School Board, etc. Click here to view all polling places.
- Call the Knox County Election Commission.
Dial 215-2480 to find out your polling place and your Council district.. Be sure to call before Election Day. The commission's phone lines are tied up on Election Day.
