The East Tennessee Geological
Society is a non-profit organization of nearly 100 geoscientists
in East Tennessee. Most of us live and work in the Knoxville/Oak
Ridge area, but we have members from Memphis to the Tri-Cities
area and beyond.
ETGS has held meetings in the Knoxville area since February 28,
1975. In recent years, the Society has been maintained largely by
geologists and hydrogeologists working in the Oak Ridge
environmental arena. However, our membership also includes
petroleum consultants, quarry geologists, gemologists, drilling
contractors, professors, students, and geologists currently
working in other fields.
We participate in ETGS to stay abreast of technical trends in the
geosciences and to take advantage of professional and social
networking opportunities. Society activities include monthly
meetings, technical presentations, field trips, and picnics.
Depending on the requirements of your licensing board(s), you may
be able to earn professional-development credit for attending
ETGS meetings and field trips.
Our meetings are held jointly with the Tennessee Section of the American Institute
of Professional Geologists (AIPG).
At each meeting, an invited speaker gives a presentation about
current research or a field project. Meetings are rather informal
and are generally held on the second Monday of the month
(September through May), although they may be rescheduled during
holidays or other special occasions. We strive to meet in a
location as convenient as possible for members in Knoxville and
Oak Ridge.
The members of ETGS organize field trips once or twice each year.
For more information on past and future trips, see our field-trip page.
We hope you will join us at our next meeting and bring a friend
or coworker. Visitors are always welcome. Meeting notices are
posted one to two weeks before each meeting.
For additional information about ETGS, check out the rest of our web site. This site is intended to
serve as a resource for the Society and its members.
Finally, we invite you to join us. Annual memberships are a
bargain at just $20 per individual, $25 per couple (same home
address), and $10 per student. Just complete a membership form and bring it to the next meeting with your dues. If
you cannot attend the meeting, you may mail them to the following
address. Whether you join at the meeting or by mail, please make
sure we have at least one current e-mail address.
