MAY SOCIAL GATHERING

Our last meeting before we break for the summer will be a social gathering, rather than a technical presentation, so you are welcome to arrive and depart at your convenience. We have space reserved outside on the patio. There is no charge beyond the food/drinks you order from the menu. As with all of our regular meetings, this event is open to members and non-members. Feel free to bring items of geologic interest to share, including photographs, rocks, books, maps, etc.

ETGS News

CHATTANOOGA FIELD TRIP: The April 14 field trip to Chattanooga was a success. Fun was had by all, and the predicted bad weather held off much longer than expected. ETGS thanks Dr. Mies and Mark Gardiner for arranging and leading a great trip. Photos have been posted on the field trip page.

TENNESSEE GEOLOGIST REGISTRATION ACT OF 2007: The Tennessee Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) has notified ETGS that this measure was recently introduced as a bill in the Tennessee legislature. If passed into law, it would require testing of Professional Geologist (PG) candidates, as well as 24 hours of continuing education biennially. Existing Registered Professional Geologists in the state would be "grandfathered" and would not be required to take the exam. Passage of this bill would bring Tennessee up to the standards established by the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG). See the House (HB1876) or Senate (SB2091) version of the bill for the current status and a link to the full text.

THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION--ARCHIVE, ORGANIZE, DELIVER: Appalachian Region PTTC Workshop, National Research Center for Coal & Energy (NRCCE), Morgantown, West Virginia, June 5, 2007, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Registration: $95.00 by June 1. Geologic information from the Appalachian oil/gas basin has been compiled in a “new generation-style” database which is part of a new trend to capture, organize and deliver, through on-line delivery systems, new and old data and research information that can be sorted in a variety of ways. Workshop speakers will discuss several of these new database projects, with an intended emphasis on how industry can access the final products. The workshop is designed for geologists and engineers with an interest in, or who are actively working in, the Appalachian basin. Service companies, software vendors, students, faculty and government agencies also will find the program to be of interest and value. For a program and other information, contact Mark Hoffman (MAHoffman@mail.wvu.edu).

GEOHAZARDS IN TRANSPORTATION IN THE APPALACHIAN REGION: The 7th Annual Technical Forum is scheduled for August 1-2, 2007, in Asheville, North Carolina. See the conference brochure for additional information and a registration form.
