It is a non-profit corporation headquartered in Prairie Village, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City. A strategic plan which was developed some years ago states that ARMA's mission is four-fold:
Advance the practice of Records and Information Management (RIM) as a discipline and profession.

Support the enhancement of professionalism of the membership.
Promote cooperative endeavors with related professional groups.
Members are information management professionals who work in business and government in areas such as communications, record storage facilities, educational institutions, financial institutions, insurance companies, health care, legal services, manufacturing, and technology.
