Amigo Visits 4H and ETRC

Amigo, the amazing horse, and his owner, Gary Sanderson, visited ETRC on April 17, 2010. Amigo, from Luttrell, Tennessee, was injured in January. His owner found him with a branch sticking into his chest behind his left front leg. The branch punctured a lung and set up a major infection. At least three times during his treatment, it seemed as if Amigo might die, but Amigo and Gary would not give up. The UT vet staff would not give up either and neither would approximately 8900 people who got to know Amigo through Facebook. People around the world prayed for Amigo and many of these people donated monies to help cover the $32000 it cost to care for Amigo. The 4Hers donated monies for Amigo.

Gary Sanderson, Amigo's owner, came to ETRC to talk to the 4Her's at their regular Saturday morning meeting. He came to talk about what Endurance racing is. Amigo is one of the top Endurance horses in the southeast and able to run distances of 50 miles. To the great surprise and joy, Amigo came along with Gary. The 4Hers got to see Amigo up close and personal. They did wear latex gloves to avoid transferring germs and possible infection to Amigo.

Amigo was released from the hospital on Sunday, April 18 and allowed to go home. There was a celebration and party at the UT Vet School for Amigo. Everyone was glad to see him go home after being in the hospital for approximately 3 months.
