Mack French
Mack French became a customer of ETTAC's when he
was still in high school and struggling with algebra and
geometry. Although Muscular Dystrophy had affected his ability
to use his hands and arms, Mack had big dreams. One of those was
to graduate from high school and go to The University of
Tennessee. Another dream was to see the Tennessee Vols football
team win a National Championship.
For over five years, through services provided by Vocational Rehabilitation and ETTAC, Mack was able to reach his first dream. He used adapted computers and software to do his school work. When U.T. won the National Championship in January, 1999, Mack was there, sitting on the sidelines. He also rode home on the same airplane as the football team. In fact, he sat in Tee Martin's lap for part of the way home because Tee's lap was softer than the plane's seat!
In many ways, Mack exemplifies the courage, tenacity, and independence of many people with disabilities. He had a dream, and ETTAC, Vocational Rehabilitation, and family and friends provided him with the support and services he needed to reach his dreams. Mack died a few months after the National Championship. This tournament is in his honor and to help all of us remember that disability is an inconvenience and a reminder that we only reach our goals through the help and support of others.
