  • Approve submissions of non-juried members on a per event basis unless exhibit is otherwise structured.

General Protocol

  • Chairperson of Standards Committee arranges jury session on request of applicant.
  • Jury will consist of at least three (3) ETWG juried members.
  • A minimum of three (3) dissimilar pieces will be made available to be juried.
  • Jurors are free to comment and discuss their thoughts in the session.
  • Jury proceedings, including scoring and all discussion, are not to be revealed by any juror outside of the jury session.  The chairperson may provide feedback to applicant at notification.

Prohibited Items

  • Items that are not allowed include but are not limited to pieces:

    • Made using illegally imported species.
    • Not made primarily of wood.
    • Not made primarily by the applicant.

Judging

  • Judging is based on the following three categories:
    • Design
      • Design not limited to any area of woodworking, style or period.
      • Construction should be sound and reflect durability suitable to the use of the piece.
      • Piece should meet the intended function, including aesthetics.
      • Finishes should be appropriately durable and suit the piece aesthetically.
    • Workmanship
      • Workmanship must reflect precision and overall high skill, e.g., attention to detail, proper fit, cosmetics, finishing, etc.
      • Close examination reveals mastery not struggle.
    • Use of Materials
      • Should be representative of the period or style of the piece.
      • Must be sound so as not to adversely affect the structural integrity of the overall piece.
      • Interesting, creative use of materials will be valued.
  • Jurors should judge an applicant’s work on its own merit against:
    • The criteria in these standards.
    • Awareness of quality of previously accepted pieces.

Scoring

  • Each juror will score on a one to ten scale each of the above categories.
    • The ETWG Rating System (see page 2) is an aid to assigning scores.
  • Score sheets will be tallied by the chairperson. The chairperson does not vote.
  • Applicants must score a minimum average of eight (8) across jurors’ averages of the category ratings.

Notification

  • The chairman may choose to mail the notification or to notify the applicant in person.
    • Chairman should, at notification, pass along any comments that might be useful to applicant in improving his or her work.
    • Score sheets are confidential and not to be shared by the chairman.
