August Meeting
We meet Tuesday, August 4th, 2009,
at Second Presbyterian Church. The
speaker will be Dr. David Crutchley, Dean of the Religion
Division, and Professor of Religion at Carson Newman
College. He will continue our discussion on South Africa
from which he just returned. He will
talk about the state of the continent of Africa, and then zoom in on South Africa
and his recent visit there. He has spent
part of his life there and has a lot of knowledge about the country. Those whose last names begin with M-Z should
bring refreshments.
President’s Message
I am sorry
that I will not be with you at the next meeting. Jean Mayer
and I will be at Columbia Seminary in Decatur,
GA, taking a course on the book
of Joshua, which is the study book for next year for Presbyterian Women. You
will enjoy the speaker in August; I have heard him before and he has a good
program and in addition, has a delightful British accent. I can’t wait to hear about the trips that
members have taken recently. I’ve heard
hints that these were real adventures.
Remember that we will not have a meeting in September, but will instead
attend the Greek Festival and the Hispanic Festival. During that month the YWCA will kick off the
Big Read, which will focus on the Hispanic Community this year and give us many
opportunities to participate in activities with members of that community. Also, in September, five of us will leave for
our two week exchange to the Ukraine
and Poland,
which should also prove to be an adventure.
So in future programs, you will hear stories of Mongolia, the Ukraine
and Poland, and China and Russia. Sandra Clark wrote a very good article about
our last meeting in the Halls Shopper.
If you would like to read it go to http://www.shoppernewsnow.com/news/071309HallsB.pdf. I have invited Sandra to come to our August
meeting to hear Dr. Crutchley. Please welcome her if she comes.
Our next
book sale to benefit the flag fund will be in November. Save your books and bring them with you.
