October Meeting

The meeting will be on October 6 at Second Presbyterian Church.  Refreshments will be served at 6:30 and the program will start at 7:00.  The speaker will be Dr. Millicent Taylor, Interim Dean of the Business Department at Carson Newman College.  She will talk about her experience at a Salzburg Seminar in the Fall of 2008.  These seminars bring together people from many countries to discuss a topic of interest.  Phyllis Driver attended one in 1997 on the subject of Non-Governmental Organizations—Leadership in a Civil Society.  At that one, there were representatives from 40 countries.

President’s Message

Seems like I haven’t seen many of you for ages and I will not be here for the October meeting as Ely and I are on the exchange to the Ukraine and Poland.  We are looking forward to this trip and look forward to telling you about it in the near future.  Joanne and Al Schuetz and Nancy Showalter are also on this trip along with twenty others from around the world.  The Stradleys are also on an exchange with a group from Memphis; they are in Turkey and we will enjoy sharing stories with them about a fascinating country.  Jim Dennis has agreed to be the ED for the incoming exchange from Lake Hartwell; those of you who signed up to be hosts should be hearing from him soon.

I am working on plans for our Christmas luncheon.  If all goes as planned, we will have it at the restored S & W Restaurant on Gay Street in downtown Knoxville.

Our sincere condolences go out to Angelyn Campbell Schultz whose husband Fred, passed away recently.  After reading his obituary, I was sorry that I had not gotten to know him better; he certainly had accomplished a lot in a life that was much too short and seemed to be a man that I would have liked to have spent some time with in conversation.  Condolences also to David Crutchley and his wife who lost their 26 year-old daughter recently.  David was our speaker in August.

Exchange to Cleveland County, England

Are you interested in the outbound Exchange next May to Cleveland County, in England? Then please do consider joining us for a dessert and coffee meeting at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24th, at the home of Lil and Grant Stradley, 197 Whippoorwill Drive, Oak Ridge.

We’ll discuss plans as they stand at the moment, proposals for a tour either before or after the Exchange, and answer any questions you might have about Friendship Force exchange travel.

If you’ve never been on a Friendship Force Exchange, I highly recommend an Exchange to England as a great way to dip your toes in the water – both the language and the culture are so similar to ours that it is a very easy adjustment, even for the novice traveler, and as with all Friendship Force Exchanges, the host families are always friendly, helpful and eager to meet you.

Kindly RSVP to me at wboys@bellsouth.net if you’d like to join us for this coffee and dessert meeting. Also let me know if you need directions to the Stradleys’ home.

– Bill Boys, Exchange Director
