SMOKY MOUNTAIN NONCOMPETITIVE HIKING CLUB

2008 SCHEDULE
MARCH 22—8:00 A.M. HUSKEY GAP TRAIL. This trail runs two miles to Huskey Gap, gaining about 1,500 feet in elevation.
If there is interest, we may extend another couple of miles to reach the junction with Little River Trail. Highlights include forest
and remnants of old homesteads.
APRIL 26—8:00 A.M. PORTERS CREEK TRAIL. This trail is well known to the group; it should be a
good time for wildflowers, as we hike to
MAY 24—8:00 A.M. MOUNT
CAMMERER VIA LOW GAP TRAIL FROM COSBY. This is a challenging hike, with a steep trail, but the view from the fire lookout at the peak
is well worth the climb; It’s about a 12 mile round trip.
JUNE 21—8:00 A.M. GREGORY BALD TRAIL. This is a 9 mile round trip,
which should get us to the bald at a good time to see the flame azaleas, a view which will make us forget the steepness of the ascent.
JULY
19—8:00 A.M. FINLEY CANE TRAIL. This is an easy 5.6 mile round trip, and we can anticipate the rhododendron being in full bloom in
July.
AUGUST 16—8:00 A.M. ALBRIGHT GROVE. This will be about 7.2 mile round trip, through virgin forest; it’s a moderately steep
hike.
SEPTEMBER 13—9:00 A.M.
OCTOBER 11—9:00 A.M. MAX PATCH. This is becoming
a fall favorite, an easy hike around Max Patch, when the fall colors should be near peak.
NOVEMBER 15—8:00 A.M. OLD SUGARLANDS
TRAIL. A 7.8 mile round trip on a good, but lightly travelled trail running from the Sugarlands Visitors’ Center to the origin of
the Bull Head trail.
