The picture to the left is of just nine of the twenty-one members of the Hiking Group on  their 3rd annual hike to Mt. LeConte.    Everyone is welcome to participate.  This is a non-competitive hiking group so you are encouraged to hike at your own pace.  Come join us!  Below is a complete schedule of our 2008 Hikes.

From left to right are Johan Koppier, Larry Musick, Mev Musick, Glenda Hollingshead, Lyle Juroff, Judy Miller, Libby Moser, Dr. John Zirkle and Samuel Hollingshead.

2008 SCHEDULE

MARCH 22—8:00 A.M. HUSKEY GAP TRAIL. This trail runs two miles to Huskey Gap, gaining about 1,500 feet in elevation. If there is interest, we may extend another couple of miles to reach the junction with Little River Trail. Highlights include forest and remnants of old homesteads.

APRIL 26—8:00 A.M. PORTERS CREEK TRAIL. This trail is well known to the group; it should be a good time for wildflowers, as we hike to Fern Branch Falls, then, for those who wish, on to Campsite 31.

MAY 24—8:00 A.M. MOUNT CAMMERER VIA LOW GAP TRAIL FROM COSBY. This is a challenging hike, with a steep trail, but the view from the fire lookout at the peak is well worth the climb; It’s about a 12 mile round trip.

JUNE 21—8:00 A.M. GREGORY BALD TRAIL. This is a 9 mile round trip, which should get us to the bald at a good time to see the flame azaleas, a view which will make us forget the steepness of the ascent.

JULY 19—8:00 A.M. FINLEY CANE TRAIL. This is an easy 5.6 mile round trip, and we can anticipate the rhododendron being in full bloom in July.

AUGUST 16—8:00 A.M. ALBRIGHT GROVE. This will be about 7.2 mile round trip, through virgin forest; it’s a moderately steep hike.

SEPTEMBER 13—9:00 A.M. CUMBERLAND GAP. This is a repeat hike, climbing through the original (restored) Cumberland Gap to the peak, with excellent vistas and some old Civil War cannons along the way.

OCTOBER 11—9:00 A.M. MAX PATCH. This is becoming a fall favorite, an easy hike around Max Patch, when the fall colors should be near peak.

NOVEMBER 15—8:00 A.M. OLD SUGARLANDS TRAIL. A 7.8 mile round trip on a good, but lightly travelled trail running from the Sugarlands Visitors’ Center to the origin of the Bull Head trail.

Important information to know for our hikes:

1)  All hikes will depart from behind the First Presbyterian Church (721 Church St., Jefferson City).
