Centenary Opening Date: May 27, 2007
(Pentecost Sunday) Closing Date: August 15, 2008 (Feast of
Assumption)
Co-chairs of the events are
Sue Clancy, Carole Willard and Roseanne Wolf. We want to celebrate
the stories and the faith of the generations of priests, religious
and other laity who have made Holy Ghost Parish the staunch, caring
Catholic community that it is today.
Steering Committee members
are at present: Monsignor Mankel, Sister Martha Naber, Mike Duncan,
Sue Clancy, Carol Willard and Roseanne Wolf. Parishioners who have
shown an interest in the centenary are being contacted to form core
committees, which will be expanded through an invitation at all
Masses. We will prepare a flyer listing the committees and their
members. People interested may join the committee(s) of their
choice.
We welcome any ideas and
suggestions to make our Holy Ghost Centennial Celebration an
occasion for our entire parish to rejoice with gratitude to Our Lord
for 100 years of the faith, the accomplishments, and the openhearted
care for one another that are hallmarks of the people of Holy
Ghost.
The centenary proper will
begin on Pentecost Sunday 2007, which is the date that the creation
of the "new" Knoxville parish was announced in 1907. Special Masses
and receptions are planned for the opening of the centennial year
and a committee is being formed to plan the activities of that very
special anniversary.
The closing banquet will be
held on the Feast of the Assumption, August 15, 2008, the
anniversary of the dedication of the 1908 church building (presently
used by the Ladies of Charity). Parishioners are also being
contacted to work on the closing events.
Other events planned are as
follows:
- School children researching their
family history in Holy Ghost Parish and presenting their family
stories at Masses during the centennial year.
- A color pictorial book and/or directory
with the parish history.
- Special 40 Hours devotion in October
2007, and Deanery Priests Meeting with dinner.
- May Procession in 2008 involving the
parish and St. Joseph School.
- A 100th anniversary theme for Christmas
2007.
- Involve other parishes and the
non-catholic community in our celebration (especially Washington
Pike United Methodist Church).
The Steering Committee is
seeking old photos, especially of the interior or the 1908 church.
Please call Melissa Mills, Parish Secretary, to arrange lending or
contributing photographs.
