HW Neighbors,

Here's a reminder plus details about our caroling plans:

horn.jpgDo you play an instrument? IF so, would you be willing to accompany your neighbors during our upcoming Christmas caroling event on next Monday, December 19, 2006?

Baby-sitting will be available along with a little party for the kiddies. To reserve your little ones a space at the home of Vanessa and Bob Standaert for baby-sitting, don't forget to call Anna Lewis at 675-4482 for details or email her at TNtatter@aol.com . For questions about the kiddie party itself, contact Vanessa at 865-804-5891.

A fun rehearsal, with coffee, will be from 7-8 on this Thursday, December 15, at Jim and Ann Durall's house.

cookies.jpgThe caroling itself ( 7-8 p.m.) will begin and end at the Durall house where we'll have a chance to visit with old friends and get to know new ones. Ann will serve coffee and a Christmas punch made from a family recipe. Cookies and other delights will also be waiting to warm bodies and hearts.

Please call or email Ann to let her know you'll be attending the rehearsal and/or the caroling so we'll know how many goodies to have on hand.

Thanks!

Warren

DAFFODIL BARGAIN FROM ANN DURALL: Bags of 20 daffodils for $10 are now $5!

daffodilsFor the past few weeks Ann Durall has been selling daffodils to benefit Knoxville's Wesley House pre-school program. The funds will be used to purchase selected books.  Ann still has some bulbs left and has asked that I tell you she's now offering them to HW residents for $5 a bag. With winter 2005 approaching, it's still a good time to plant. The bulbs are on Ann's front porch. Just ring the doorbell.

Hi Neighbors!

Just a quick reminder that the HWHA Holiday Party is this Saturday, December 4th, at 5:30 p.m. at the Farragut Intermediate School cafeteria. We're hoping for a really good turnout! If you are planning on coming, please send me an email or call me at 675-5796 or call Gloria Paul at 675-0839. We're trying to determine how much turkey and ham to order. Remember, if you want to participate in the ornament exchange, please bring a wrapped ornament ($7-10). Each person who wants to play must have an ornament. Children do not need to bring ornaments. We are providing them for the kids. Also please bring a side dish, salad or dessert. I hope to hear from you soon and see everyone Saturday!

Season's Greetings!
Fiona Hill

Hickory 2003 October Festival on Saturday, October 18, 2003

The Hickory Woods October Festival is coming on Saturday, October 18th, 2003 beginning at 4:30 PM. This year it will be in the Rolling Creek Cul-de-Sac. The Haydens will host a hayride and children are encouraged to wear their Halloween Costumes. We will have a chili cook-off again, so get your pot warmed up. Good chili has to cook for a while (a day or more) to be really good and to meld the flavors says last years champ. Everyone gets a taste and a vote for which pot they like the best. Afterwords, we will roast marshmallows over the fire pits. Plan for a lot of fun and meet your neighbors.

Hickory Woods Sparkle Day (lawn judging and picnic)
Saturday, May 17, 2003

Start now to spruce up your lawns for the annual Sparkle Day celebration. Lawn judging will be in the afternoon and red and blue ribbons will be awarded. The basic lawn guidelines are:

  • Red Ribbon: Freshly mowed lawn, lawn edged, mulch where appropriate, drive and walks swept and flower beds and curbs are reasonably weed free.
  • Blue Ribbon: Lawns that meet all the red ribbon criteria and more -- the best of the best.

After all your hard work, join us at the picnic for a good meal and lots of fun. Buddy's Bar-B-Q will provide our meal, so you don't have to bring anything. And, you won't want to miss the second annual dessert bake-off! Get your lawns spruced up and your dessert entry perfected because May 17 is just around the corner!

Click here to see the Sparkle Day rules page. Watch for more details soon...

If, in the meantime, you have questions about the picnic, please call Melissa at 675-7583, or Gloria at 675-0839, or Fiona at 675-5796.

Hickory Woods Garage Sale on May 3rd

Hickory Woods Homeowners Annual Garage Sale Reminder
May 3rd, 2003 from 8:: AM until 1:00 PM rain or shine. The announcement will be in the Knoxville News Sentinel running Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. A sign will be posted at the front entrance after 500 PM on Friday. It would be helpful if you will place balloons on your mailboxes to guide shoppers. the Vietnam Veets will come by around 3:00 PM for any items you didn't sell but would like to donate. Just leave them at the end of your driveway with a note for Vets to take the items.

Get your stuff ready for the annual garage sale in the neighborhood. May 3rd (only 13 days after Easter) Saturday -- beginning at 8:00 AM and ending at 1:00 PM. [Note: Early sales are unfair...] There will be signs pointing to the neighborhood. Put balloons on your mailbox if you are participating. After the sale, there will be a pickup of unsold items by a charitable organization. Make sure the surplus goes to them, not to scavengers. There will be an ad in the newspaper, so take advantage. Make a few bucks off that old stuff. Feel free to advertise your address especially if you have some popular items for sale. Send me an e-mail list of your really good stuff and we will post it right here for all to see on Friday night! All I need is the address and the list of items. Save the prices for a surprise!

Hickory Woods Christmas Party

T'was weeks before Christmas,
When all through Hickory Woods,
The Social Committee was stirring,
Things weren't looking too good.

The invitations were being written with care,
In hopes that our party could be held somewhere.
The children were happily snug in their beds,
While thoughts of a party danced in their heads.

And Gloria in her panic and Fiona needing a nap,
Both wanted to give Melissa a much-needed slap.
Because in the neighborhood arose such a clatter,
Where is the party and does it really matter?

We needed to get an idea in a flash.
Where could we have our big Christmas bash?
The moon wasn't out and there wasn't any snow,
But we needed a place that the whole family could go.

When what to our wondering eyes should appear?
No, no, no, it was not a reindeer!
It was one of Santa's helpers, not quite a St. Nick.
But he found us a place and he found it quick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name.
Now, Melissa! Now, Gloria! Now Fiona! No hurry!
You have a place, so you don't have to worry.

Concord, First Baptist has offered fellowship hall,
A room that provides space for one and for all.
There is even a piano for tunes and some singing,
And plenty of room for the food we are bringing.

So up to the mailboxes in vans they all flew,
With all the invitations and many hopes too.
And then in a twinkling neighbors heard by their doors,
Three ladies that they had all seen before.

Their droll little mouths were drawn up like a bow,
They were stopping by to let everyone know.
That this year our neighbors requested we do,
A party that includes the younger ones too.

There will certainly be something for everyone,
Like an ornament exchange to stir up some fun.
Every adult should bring an ornament, selected with care.
We'll provide one for all of the children there.

Get Friday Dec. 6th @ 6:00 in your head.
Trust us, you'll have nothing to dread.
After all, we'll do most of the work,
But please bring an appetizer, veggie or dessert.

Since it helps us tremendously just to prepare,
Please RSVP and say that you'll be there.
Then away from the door with a little whistle,
The ladies all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard them exclaim ere they drove out of sight
"Happy Christmas to all and please join us that night!"

Hickory Woods Homeowners Halloween Party...

scarecrow.gifThings are about to get cooking in Hickory Woods! The recipe for our fall gathering has started preheating. We will warm things up with a couple of campfires, add our family and friends, mix in the chili-cookoff, throw in a little cornbread and the fixin's for petros, toss in some pizza for the kids, stir in some great conversation and a little music, add a craft or activity for the children, and top everything off with some old fashioned caramel apples and some smores. Combine all the above and warm up to a great night with your neighbors.

***Just the facts: Things will heat up on Saturday Oct. 26th. @ 6:00pm in the cul-de-sac at 628 Hickory Woods Rd. This is for everyone - adults and children alike. Kids feel free to wear your costumes. Bring your chairs.

Here are some pictures from the event...

The cookoff table with chili entries... The chili cookoff was a great success! Nine entries were there so we had a chili feast. Bowls of good stuff dressed with grated cheese and sour cream and with Fritos and corn chips made a great meal. Desserts were provided, too. Pumpkin pie was good as were the lime torts. The winner of the chili cookoff was your humble webmaster, John Andrews, for his dutch oven chili. Second place went to Charlotte Klasson of Neighborhood watch fame.

Lots of little kids were there in costume. We liked Sponge Bob, but the others were good too. (They got to eat pizza!) Regular folks had to eat chili. The tasters of the chili all got to taste each kind of chili and then place their ticket in the holder for the one they liked best.

Halloween party at Hickory Woods...

On Halloween, there were more costumes at the door. Here is a look at some of the pretty girls and ugly boys and cute little kids...

Some trick-or-treaters on Valley Trail...

Are you a little tired of the same old, same old? This year instead of the Halloween activities like we have had for the past few years, we are going to try a new recipe for a great fall gathering. The best part is that it is for everyone in the neighborhood, young, old, and in-between! We will start with a large campfire, then add some family and friends, include a chili cook-off, mix in some kid crafts, stir in some great conversation and a little music, and cook up a few smores and some old-fashioned caramel apples. Combine all the above and warm up to a a great night with your neighbors. You won't want to miss the food and fun! So start working on your favorite chili recipes now! Kids, come in your Halloween costumes and make-up! We are stirring up things on Saturday, October 26, 2002 at 6:00 PM. Watch for more details.

Questions?: Melissa Mustard or Gloria Paul

The plant walk was a success. See the notice on the Plant Walk page.

The Out-To-Lunch-Bunch met at Apple Cake Tea Room on March 14th, 2001. There were 18 ladies present. A great lunch and a good time was reported by all that attended. If you've never had a chance to attend one of these luncheons, try to join us the next time. It's a wonderful way to meet your neighbors and a good way to take a break from that normal routine. Come and join the fun - celebrate by getting to know a new neighbor or renewing old friendships. Everyone is welcome! For information about the next lunch for a couple of hours of fun and socializing, call Rose Wilkes at 677-3986, Helen Lann at 675-5172 or Luanne Hurst at 675-0658.

In November, 2000, the lunch was at Little City in Farragut. Ten ladies and one baby attended the luncheon. The food was reported to be very good and more than enough, everyone took left-overs home. A semi-private area was provided for the group to exchange neighborhood news. Luanne says the Little City is a good place with good service. For reservations for the next luncheon in the new year, call Rose, Helen or Luanne.

Our Christmas Open House was hosted by John and Jennifer Paxton this year on December 10th, 2000. Click here for pictures of this event.

2000 Halloween Party at the Pauls

The Halloween party for 2000 was held at the corner of Creekwood Terrace and Hickory Woods Dr. This was for young kids. The event was super and the Pauls did a great job of hosting the event. See the pictures by clicking here.

Painting Entrance and Street Signs

The main entrance sign and the other Hickory Woods signs has been painted this fall by volunteers. The color scheme was changed from white on brown to gold on green. Thanks to John Andrews, Bill Myers and Mark Mustard and Mark's brother-in-law. For the record, it took less than 1 gallon of green and about 1/2 quart of gold to do the signs. Painting the main sign took about six hours and each of the seven street signs took about two hours to complete. Painting was a two- or three-step process with two coats of main color and one of letter color. The letters on the small signs are hard to do and the old letter paint has to be removed before the new coat is painted.

Christmas Bows for Mailboxes

New ribbons have been purchased and new bows have been made for the neighborhood mailboxes. Help was provided this year (1999) to make and install the ribbons by : Shelly Casteel, Ann Durall, Kathy Fogleson, Jan Foss and her sister, Sally, Margaret Freeman, Anita Glassmire, Luanne Hurst, Carmie Lee, Diana Lewis, Matte McCaw, Brenda Rollins, Mary Sue Street, Mable Sumner, Vonnie Tharp, and Rose Wilkes.

Entrance Sign Decorations

Thanks also to Ann Duall and to Luanne Hurst for their decorations on the entrance sign. These two ladies have accepted the task of decorating the entrance sign for several years and, as usual, it looks lovely. Thanks again.

Hickory Woods Christmas Open House

Tim and Vonnie Tharp hosted the Hickory Woods Christmas Open House on December 12, 1999. HWHA says thanks. Thanks to the Social Committee for their help, too.

Christmas Luminaries 1999

Luminary picture Roll the top down 1. Hickory Woods once again put out luminaries on Christmas Eve. A few days before Christmas, area reps brought each family luminary candles and white paper bags.

Sand for weighting the bottom of the bags was delivered to the end of the cul-de-sac on Hickory Woods Road a week before Christmas. Everyone put the luminaries close to the curb, about five feet apart and lit the candles at 6:00 PM on Christmas Eve. The evening was cold with a wind blowing. Even so, my wife and I and my sons and daughter-in-law bundled up and went walking to the end of the Place 1 cup of sand in the bottom. Place the candle in the sand. cul-de-sac and back to view the wonderful sight. I went out and took time exposure pictures of the lighted streets. You can see some of them here. JPA. It looked beautiful and we thank everyone who participated in the celebration of Christmas. A special thank-you on that bitter cold night to those who helped light their neighbors luminaries while they were out of town. Many thanks to the Schaerer family, Kiane Smego and her family, Jeff Withoft, Luanne and Joe Hurst, Lori Chmielewski and her family, Tom Inman, Susie Carr, and Rex, Theresa and Ashley Baldwin. Without the help of all of these neighbors in lighting all of the extra luminaries, it would not have been so successful. Thanks for your support!

Here is how to make a luminary: Roll the top of the paper bag down one inch or so to stiffen it and keep it open. Place about 1/2 lb (2 cups or so) Place them 5 to 6 feet apart. of sand in the bottom of the bag. Place the candle on the sand centered in the bag bottom. The easy way to light these is to use a propane lighter like that used to start a fire in your fireplace. Matches burn you fingers while you try to light the candle in the bottom of the bag. Even long fireplace matches burn to fast when pointed down into the bag.

Be careful with the candles. The wicks are not firmly bonded to the wax and they can fall right out of the bottom of the candle and get lost in your lawn.

Place the luminaries along the curb about 5 to 6 feet apart.

The sand may be disposed of in your garden after you are done with the luminaries. Luminaries should be picked up and removed the next morning.

  • The annual Halloween Party was held October 31st, 1999 at 3:00 PM. It was hosted by Cherie and Bruce Klumpp.

The party was for children 12 and under. Children brought a bag for treats and prizes. Families brought a bag of candy for the traditional Ball of Hay Candy Scramble. HWHA provided an early dinner and lots of fun games and activities.

The party started off with games, then hot dogs and chips. The ball of Hay Candy Scramble ended the festivities. Trick or Treat followed.

The kids who went and then came by my house said they had a good time!

  • For the Christmas season, all mailboxes are decorated with bows, thanks to the ladies of HWHA,

  • For Christmas Eve, the HWHA provides luminaries (votive candles in white paper bags) to place along the curbs of ALL the houses in the neighborhood. This is really wonderful to see when the whole neighborhood is out just after dark and all the little lights are glowing for the Christmas season.

We keep in touch with the Farragut city council. This includes having our input on community development and changes and repairs to Hickory Woods roads and signs. We are looking at posting a "NO SOLICITING" sign at the entrance to the neighborhood, and checking on painting all the galvanized iron signposts put up by the township with the signature brown paint used on the original signs and on the entrance HICKORY WOODS sign.

The Hickory Woods neighborhood participates in the Sheriff's neighborhood watch program. Zones are established and leadership of each zone rotates within the zone. See your directory for more information about the program.
