The following petition recommends that a law be enacted in Tennessee specifying that truck tractors and semi-trailers must travel in the right-most lane of interstate or multi-lane divided highways, except when passing. Ann Durall has been active in promoting this regulation and provided this copy for inclusion on our pages.

Now is the time for all GFWC of TN members, friends and family to come to the aid of the GFWC of TN Project; Highway Safety. We are advised by Senator Tim Burchett and Rep. Jamie Hagood, who are sponsoring these Bills, to "check the list of the appointed Senate and House Transportation Committees and write to those that are from your area. A complete list is provided for you in this article. Send a post card, note, or letter to each one in your area and say, (example)
" I am one of your constituents and I want you to support House Bill 371 or Senate Bill 182. Tennessee citizens want safety on their highways such as we see in Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and other states."
The new number of the House Bill for Highway Safety this year is H Bill 371 and the new number for the Senate Bill for Highway Safety this year is SBill 182.
Both Bills read: An Act to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 55, Chapter 8, Part 1, relative to the rules of the road for truck tractors and semi-trailers.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLEY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 55, Chapter 8, Part 1, is amended by adding the following as a new, appropriately designated section:
Section 55-8-1__.
(a) Truck tractors and semi-trailers, as defined in Section 55-8-101, shall travel in the right-most lane of interstate or multi-lane divided highways, except when passing.
(b) A violation of this section is a Class C misdemeanor, punishable only by a fine of fifty dollars ($50.00).
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2001, the public welfare requiring it.
(Other Highway safety Bills that are pending, HB908, HB909, HB910 and HB911 that require incentive anti-splash flaps, twin trail combinations and 5% grade. Rep. Hagood has asked for our support for these bills also.)
As members of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, we can make this Bill become law with our interest in safety for all citizens. GFWC members in other states have supported this type of legislation with positive results. Let us step forward now, with confidence that our legislators are committed to our best interests.
