Business meetings are for business and begin and end on time.

Please be on time.

Minutes of the Hickory Woods Homeowners Association Meeting March 11th, 2003

The spring meeting of the Hickory Woods Homeowners Association was held at the home of David and Deborah Mann. Twenty-three homeowners were present.

Craig Dunn spoke briefly about his campaign for Alderman.

Chair Jennifer Paxton called the meeting to order at 7:20pm.

Minutes of the October 1 meeting were read and approved as read.

Treasurer’s report was presented and approved.

John Andrews initiated a motion to donate $100 to Korrnet, the company that hosts the Hickory Woods Web page. Autumn Clemons made a motion the increase the donation to $250. The motion was seconded, a vote was held and the motion was carried.

The Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held at the home of Jim and Anne Durall. It is for children ages 11 and under and will start at 10 AM sharp. All are invited to attend.

A nomination Committee will be needed to fill several positions in the Hickory Woods Homeowners Association. Jennifer Paxton and Theresa Baldwin will be stepping down, as well the three Social Committee Chairs. Also needed will be someone for the newsletter/communications. The Treasurer and Secretary will remain. The nominating committee will be: Charlotte Klasson, Rose Wilkes, and Brenda Rollins.

Several thank-you’s from neighbors who have been the recipients of meals from the Hospitality Committee were read. It was mentioned that this is a very active committee that responds to the personal needs of neighbors, and that this service is greatly appreciated.

Plans for Sparkle Day are already underway. Many people would like the event earlier in the year, to avoid the intense summer sun and the bugs of July. A lengthy discussion ensued about the best time to hold the activity, and tentative plans were made for May 17th.

The annual Garage Sale will be held two weeks earlier, on May 3rd.

The following families were welcomed into the neighborhood:

  • Terry and Laura Ash and their three children at 1200 Leatherwood Lane.
  • Cindy Williams and her two daughters at 652 Hickory Woods Rd.
  • Laura Deike and her two sons at 617 Hickory Woods Rd.

A discussion ensued about the flooding that occurred in the neighborhood during the inclement weather several weeks earlier, particularly at the Paxton home. Jennifer talked briefly about the flooding, showed pictures, and reported on what the developers of Berkeley Park plan to do to avoid any future flooding.

The Plant Walk, in honor of Luanne Hearst will be held sometime in the spring. Despite the rain last year, the plant exchange was a success, and plans have been made to continue this event every spring.

Charlotte Klasson reminded everyone that if something unusual happens, to report it to the Neighborhood Watch immediately.

The Out-To-Lunch Bunch will meet next on Wednesday, April 2nd at Northern Exposure.

Chair Jennifer Paxton adjourned the meeting at 8:13pm.

[Note: Alderman Candidate Farmer spoke briefly at the end of the meeting. This was omitted from the official minutes and should be corrected at the next meeting. JPA, Webmaster ]

Winter meeting in March, 2003

Our Winter, 2003 meeting will be at 7:00 PM on March 11th at the home of David and Deborah Mann. They live in the fully refurbished home at 510 Rolling Creek Rd. The agenda will include the usual minutes from last meeting, treasurer report, brief discussion from social committee for upcoming events, getting a nominating committee together, we also have two gentlemen that would like to speak to the homeowners one is Richard Huntley regarding widening of Smith Road and the other is Brian Farmer who I believe is running for an Alderman position, and would like 10 minutes of our time to pitch his platform. Also, we have been requested by KORRnet for a donation for support of the web page server we use. John has requested that we donate $100 for this free service.

Easter Egg hunt in April... (29th is Sat. before Easter)?

Garage Sale in May...?

Sparkle Day in June...?

Halloween party...?

Christmas party...?

The Hickory Woods homeowners meeting: Tuesday, February 19th, at 7:00 PM. The winter meeting was held at Gloria and Leon Paul's home, 12121 Creekwood Terrace on the corner with Hickory Woods. (The one that had the great Halloween decorations.)

The meeting agenda included the nomination and election of officers for the next year. Other things of importance were on the agenda including

  • The upcoming event schedule.
  • Progress report by the Pole Light committee.
  • Adding advertising to the printed directory that we distribute annually. We see this as a limited opportunity for Hickory Woods residents to advertise their businesses to their neighbors. We need to set the guidelines for this, so think about it.
  • A report on traffic calming in Hickory Woods to slow traffic on Hickory Woods Road.
  • A discussion of HWHA painting curb address numbers for all homes in the neighborhood.

Notes on meeting October 2, 2001 at the home of Jim and Ann Durall.

Melissa Mustard and Gloria Paul announced that the Halloween party would be on October 27th from 2:00 until 4:00 PM at the home of Howard and Wanda Fass. It was decided this evening that the Christmas party for adults only would be on December 7th at the home of Jim and Ann Durall. Everyone will bring a snack or dessert and the party would begin at 7:00 PM and go until 9:00. Twenty-one homeowners were present.

Newest Homeowners

We welcomed the newest homeowners into our area. They are the Woodson family on Leatherwood Lane, and Ken and Libby Underwood on Valley Trail. The Freemerman's home has been sold but the new owners are not yet moved in.

Lamp Post Committee Report

Ann Durall spoke on behalf of the Lamp Post Committee. She presented a picture of the lamp post that she and the committee have chosen for us to consider putting in front of our homes to add not only security but beauty to Hickory Woods. The lamp only would cost $93.34 if less than 20 were ordered and $70.00 if twenty or more were ordered. The post would cost $56.00/$42.00 depending on quantity. The fixture is a six sided beveled glass electric lamp with a light sensor. Posts come in black or white. Black is preferred.

Allen Clemmons spoke about the cost of having the electric run from your home to the lamp. He passed around an estimate for the work from Mountain Electric Company. Homeowner Cerine Haden made a motion to have at least two other estimates provided and then we should meet again to see what the cost would be. A second motion was made and the vote was carried to move forward on this.

Speeding in Hickory Woods

Jennifer Paxton speaking regarding the speeding that is going out of control in Hickory Woods brought up safety issues. She reported that Capt. Ben Harkins from the Sheriff's Department has put Hickory Woods on a rotation with other areas having the same problems and. She also suggested that we talk with the Engineering Department about putting in some sort of traffic calming device to slow cars down. No one at the meeting disagreed that we should move forward on this issue. Jennifer Paxton and Theresa Baldwin would take on this task.

Gregg Maples Illness

Cindy Inman updated us on the poor health of long-time homeowner Greg Maples. He has been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and was not doing very well. The family was requesting no phone call or visits at this time, but Cindy felt that sending cards would be great. She also asked if anyone would be interested in helping out with meals occasionally as they would be having family coming and going and it would such supper for the family. A list was passed around and we got a great response from the homeowners. Twenty people signed up to help with meals. Thank you all.

Coyote Report

Cerine Haden spoke on behalf of the homeowners who are missing cats or have found their cats mauled over the past couple of weeks. What was first thought to be feral dogs has turned into coyotes. We have at least 20 missing cats at this time. She is actively looking into traps to catch the coyotes and disposing of them. She is hoping that we will get support from Animal Control (Knox County) for getting a cage trap. There is a limited supply of these traps and we could not get them at this point. It was unclear when we would be able to get the traps. Brian Hinley is a contact person with Animal Control. His phone number is 215-5240.

Fire Ant Update

Ann Durall spoke briefly on fire ants that are in Berkeley Park behind us. She said if you find a mound in your yard that looks suspicious, you should leave it and contact James A. Kener at the State of Tennessee Department of Agriculture. He is Insect & Plant Disease Area Supervision in the Division of Plant Industries. His phone is 594-6098.

Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.

Notes on meeting May 17, 2001 at the home of Theresa and Rex Baldwin.

We welcomed Greer and Yvonne Carey, new homeowners on Smith Road, and Rob and Jennifer Ross at the corner of Valley Trail and Hickory Woods Road.

Theresa Baldwin presented a $100.00 gift card from Kroger which everyone agreed it will go toward food for the Sparkle Day picnic. The new manager at Kroger is Mike Slaton. He is the Neighborhood Coordinator for this project of getting acquainted with the neighborhoods in his area. He has contacted all the homeowners associations in the area and invited them to the store. He is presenting gift cards to the leaders of the organizations when they come into the store to visit.

Green Buzzer will judge the yards on Sparkle Day beginning at about 1:00 PM. Bring your favorite dish and the picnic will begin at 5:00 PM. We will have a dunking booth, snow cones and cotton candy and a basketball game.

No one volunteered to manage the garage sale so it was canceled, but at the meeting Ann Durall and Melissa Mustard volunteered to put out signs and make fliers so the garage sale did happen.

Election was held with these results:

Theresa Baldwin and Jennifer Paxton -- Co-Chairs,
Janine Burnett -- Secretary
Susie Carr -- Treasurer
Committee Chairs and Members are: Neighborhood Watch Coordinator -- Charlotte Klasson
Planning Committee:
Jim Waring -- Chair
Bill Myers
Ed Seaver
Social Committee Milissa Mustard -- Chair
Gloria Paul
Beautification Committee -- Glen and Mable Sumner
Communication -- Cindy Inman
Directory -- John and Dixie Andrews
Webmaster -- John Andrews

A committee was established to research lamp post guidelines for the neighborhood. Chairman is Ann Durall. Members are Ursula Hayes, John Andrews, and Jim Waring. This committee will have information by the Fall meeting.

Notes on meeting Tuesday, Feb 27, 2001 at the home of Charles and Diana Lewis.

The spring schedule was tentatively established.

Easter Egg Hunt

Easter egg hunt will be at Ann Durall's home on Valley Trail This event will be on Saturday before Easter. It always starts exactly on time, so be sure to get there a little early. Ann asks for homemade cookies (not store bought!) to provide some snacks. Adults are also invited to watch the activity. Last year the BIG EGG was not found. The BIG EGG held a $5.00 bill. It was found months later when Ann was weeding.

Garage Sale

The garage sale will be held on May 19th from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. We will provide balloons to place on mail boxes on that date so buyers can find the sale locations easily.

Sparkle Day

Sparkle Day will be on Saturday, June 9th. We will have 50 ribbons again this year. This is the neighborhood picnic day. Plan on attending and bringing the kids to see the clown. More on this later.

Help for Iris

Ways to help Iris Greer were discussed at length. Tom Greer passed away on Feb 24 and Iris needs some immediate help. A card signing table will be set up at the Valley Trail cul-de-sac on March 3rd.

Hickory Woods Homeowners Association Meeting,
February 27, 2001

The winter meeting was held at the home of Charles and Dianna Lewis. Eighteen homeowners were present.

Chair Theresa Baldwin called the meeting to order at 7:10pm.

Minutes of the September 19, 2000 meeting were read and approved as read.

Treasurers report was presented and approved.

Social Chair Jennifer Paxton announced the dates for the following events:

  1. Easter Egg Hunt will be April 14 at the home of Jim and Ann Durall starting at 10:00am sharp. Every family who attends is asked to bring one dozen homemade cookies.
  2. Yard Sale is set for May 19 from 8:00am until 2:00pm. We need volunteers to take phone calls from those willing to participate in the sale, and to make sure signs are made and balloons are given out to the homes who will be selling this day.
  3. Sparkle Day is set for June 9. Judging is set to start at 1:00pm and the picnic will start at 5:00pm. The picnic will be held in the cul-de-sac of Valley Trail and everyone is asked to bring a dish to pass and chairs to sit on. We will be serving grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, and sausages, with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions for trimmings. This year we will be renting tables to give our residents a place to set their plates and beverages.

It was noted that the Clemmons family is building a new home at 624 Hickory Woods. The Planning Committee was notified and is following the progress of this new addition to our sub-division. We also introduced and welcomed two new homeowners that moved in this year. First we have Ed and Lucy Seaver who moved into 629 Hickory Woods; and Leonard and Sherri Palko who moved into 500 Mt. Breeze.

A motion was made by Jim Waring to send a Fifty-dollar donation to the First Baptist Church of Concord in memory of Thomas Greer a 16 year resident that passed away last month.

It was noted that there is a serious case of Pine Bark Beetle problems in our area. Homes, yards, and fences of homeowners in our area are being hit by the dead and falling trees every time it rains or we get a good wind. It was noted that if any homeowner has this beetle problem, they should get rid of the trees before they do their neighbor serious damage.

Chair Theresa Baldwin adjourned the meeting at 8:30pm.

Hickory Woods Homeowners Association Meeting

September 9, 2000

The Fall/Winter meeting of the Hickory Woods Homeowners Association was held at the home of Rex and Theresa Baldwin. Thirty-one homeowners were present.

Chair Theresa Baldwin called the meeting to order at 700pm. Minutes of the May 25, 2000 meeting were read and approved as read. Treasurers report was presented and approved.

OLD BUSINESS

Sign Lighting

The lights have been repaired on the front entrance sign. The old fluorescent lights have been removed and the upper lamp shroud was narrowed. New low-voltage spotlights have been added on each side of the sign. The lamps continue to be actuated by the solar switch. The electrical system has been rewired. (Now the electrical outlet on the sign is controlled by the solar switch. It may no longer be used for electrical service for the sign during the day. JPA)

Painting the Hickory Woods Signs

It was brought up if the front sign was going to be painted green and gold, then the brown and white street signs should also be painted to match. John Andrews, Bill Myers, and Ursula Hays agreed to be the committee in charge of repainting the signs.

Planning and Neighborhood Watch

Charlotte Klasson, Chairman of the Planning Committee and of the Neighborhood Watch Program, is moving to Boulder, Colorado. The Planning Committee appointed Jim Waring as chair of Planning and Ursula Hays and Ron Freemerman will remain on that committee. The neighborhood watch chairperson is still open. Mable Sumner reminded everyone to check with the planning committee before painting or adding or remodeling to save having to re-do it if it isn't within the neighborhood guidelines or other codes.

Neighborhood Watch

The neighborhood watch program was discussed and everyone was reminded to communicate break-ins, etc. to the neighborhood watch representative and to your neighbors. This begins the Neighborhood Watch Plan and notifications. Also, e-mail is another way of communication. On the web page, send an e-mail to hckrywds@aol.com.

Decals for Homeowners Cars

It was brought up again to have decals on the homeowners car. During discussion, John Andrews said that earlier opinions were posted on the web page in the Forum section and others could be sent to the web page. Just send an e-mail to hckrywds@aol.com.

Homeowners Dues

There are 16 homeowners who have not paid their dues. Dues have been mandatory since 1995. It was suggested that, for new homeowners, dues could be paid at closing. The Association could also to send a copy of the Homeowners Association Covenants to the listing agents when houses go on the market.

NEW BUSINESS

Activities

Luminaries -- Chair Theresa Baldwin brought up the luminaries issue explaining how difficult it was last year with windy conditions and with a number of neighbors away. Brenda Lawson made a motion not to have luminaries due to many conflicts and it was seconded by Carmie Haden. Sixteen Homeowners voted no and seven Homeowners voted yes. So the result will be no luminaries as a neighborhood activity for Christmas 2000.

Halloween Party -- Jennifer Paxton, chair of the Social Committee, announced the Halloween Party will be at her house at 6:00pm on Halloween night, then afterwards everyone will go trick or treating. Every family attending is to bring one bag of candy. There will be no hay bale shuffle.

Christmas Party/Open House -- We need a host for the Christmas Party/Open House. This is usually on a Sunday Afternoon with a two-hour time duration. Volunteers should contact Jennifer Paxton or Theresa Baldwin.

Other Items of Interest

Re paving -- Ann Durall called the Farragut Engineering office about re paving Hickory Woods streets. She had read in the paper of allotment to be on the list for next spring. She is checking in to the re paving. See also the notes on the web page Forum page.

Fire Hydrants -- It was brought to everyone's attention that if fire hydrants are painted black it means no water is available from that hydrant. You need to call the Farragut Township with further questions about the hydrant.

Chair Theresa Baldwin adjourned the meeting.

Respectfully Submitted
Janine Burnett
Secretary

Meeting of the Hickory Woods Homeowners on May 25, 2000 at the Burnett's home

Eleven homeowners were present for the Spring/Summer meeting of the Association. The following business was discussed:

  • The Easter Egg Hunt was well attended. Thanks to Ann Durall and all the parents who made cookies for the event.

  • The luminaries discussion was continued from the last meeting. It was decided that there should be a special committee established to oversee the luminary project. Jennifer Paxton and Melissa Mustard agreed to be on the committee.

  • It was decided to request more volunteers for the Sparkle Day picnic.

  • Dues letters were distributed today by Theresa and Ashley Baldwin.

  • A complaint was voiced by a resident about the garage sale. The resident felt that it brought in some undesirable people who otherwise would not know of the neighborhood. Those present at the meeting felt the garage sale was especially successful this year. They felt it was better to have everyone out together for this event. A "Thank You" will be put into the newsletter to all residents for tolerating the garage sale traffic along with a request for feedback concerning everyone's opinion on continuing the annual sale. If you have an opinion on the sale, click here to e-mail the association. Your comments will be added to the Forum page.

  • The election of new officers was held. These are the results:
    Co-Chairs
    Theresa Baldwin and Carmie Lee

    Secretary
    Janine Burnett

    Treasurer
    Susie Carr

    Planning Committee chair
Chair: Charlotte Klasson, New member: Ursula Hayes

    Communications
    Cindy Inman

    Social Committee
    Jennifer Paxton

    Beautification
    Glen and Mable Sumner

    Directory
    John and Dixie Andrews

  • Cindy Inman was asked to add her e-mail address to the newsletter so neighbors could send her information for inclusion. She was also asked to remind all of us about speeding.

  • Charlotte Klasson, new Chair of the Planning Committee, discussed several apparent violations of the covenants and property restrictions that the committee will be discussing. Because the residents may be unfamiliar with the covenants, it was suggested that the newsletter include a review of them before sending out letters to offenders.

  • Mable Sumner brought up that the neighborhood sign needs work. It was suggested that the sign be repainted with new colors. A green background with gold letters was selected similar to that of Linda Heights (near CVS.) Mrs. Sumner will make the final decisions on paint.
It was mentioned that the lights are not working properly on the sign. Estimates are to be obtained and the Co-Chairs will order the repairs.

  • Neighborhood teen activities were discussed. This is an open item. Send your suggestions to hckrywds@aol.com. All ideas will be posted on the forum page.

  • Sparkle Day will be on June 10th. Printed reminders will be distributed. Jennifer Paxton has arranged for the clown again this year.

  • The fall meeting will be held in September.

Meeting on Tuesday, February 29, 2000 at the Paxton's home

Activities for this year were scheduled. Here is what is coming:

  • The Easter egg hunt is scheduled for April 22 at the home of Ann and Jim Durall on Valley Trail. The hunt itself will begin PROMPTLY at 10:00 AM so be sure to get there a little before that for instructions, etc. We suggest you arrive at 09:45 AM. Ann will have coffee for the adults and juice for the children. We are looking for a few parents to bring a dozen or so HOMEMADE cookies. If you can bring a dozen cookies, she would appreciate it.

  • The annual garage sale will be held this year on May 20 from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM. We will run an add in The Knoxville Sentinel and the Farragut Press Enterprise for this event. We need to hear from neighbors who will participate this year so we can get balloons for you to put on your mailboxes. If you are going to be a part of the garage sale, call Carmie Lee at 966-3799 and she will get those balloons to you.

  • Sparkle Day is scheduled for June 10th. This year we will again have the picnic in the Valley Trail circle. The particulars on Sparkle Day festivities will be posted shortly and we will also be updating you in the newsletters to follow.

  • We had a wonderful response to making our streets brighter by adding more street lights. Several volunteers requested that we put a street light on an existing pole in their yard and they will pay the $5.05 monthly fee to LCUB. If anyone is interested in having a light put up in there area please contact Theresa Baldwin at 777-1461.

Meeting about Neighborhood Watch on November 1, 1999 at Joe and Luanne Hurst's home

See the neighborhood watch page for information on the November 1, 1999 meeting on the neighborhood watch program.

Meeting on Thursday, September 23, 1999 at John and Dixie Andrews' home on Valley Trail

Here is what happened (unofficial)

  1. Desert and beverages (cookies, pound cake, ginger cake, something scrumptious with a peanut butter cookie crust, chocolate filling and whipped cream topping excellent.

  2. Minutes of the last meeting

  3. Treasurer's report -there was not one. Pending till next meeting...

  4. Follow up on old business

    • Christmas mailbox ribbons - we will buy new ones for this year. They only last for a few years. Then we need to replace them.

    • Luminaries - We will do it again.

  5. Kathy Foglesong of the Social Committee reported on:

    • Halloween party - Special for kids up to age 12. October 31 in the afternoon. Lots of things to do for kids; hot dogs to eat and ending with the hay ball... Then go trick or treating, then home to count the loot... Any volunteers to help organize and operate? Call Kathy Foglesong if you can help. Klumpps will host.

    • Information on Christmas party - The Tharps will host this one. It is planned as a buffet this year. Should be fun. Will be mid-December. See this page for more information and watch for the newsletter.

  6. Upcoming Neighborhood Watch Meeting - Monday, November 1. Mark your calendar and ask your neighbors to attend also.

  7. Changes to the Neighborhood Watch program - we have some new volunteers for the job of NW Captain. Captains should be people who are home all day and can be aware of what is going on in their neighborhood. This meeting on Nov. 1 is really important and everyone should plan on attending and making sure their neighbors also attend. More is coming on this web site, so keep an eye out.

  8. Adding lights to dark sections of Hickory Woods - more information coming on this. The bulbs can be updated to lower wattage with the same or better light output. Saves you money for the year, but costs $25 to change the bulb and fixture. Still a good deal.

  9. Status of the web site - Korrnet is looking at our request to post houses for sale. They have a problem with the commercial aspects of this. They used our site as the demo of a neighborhood site at the KORRNET DAYS seminar on Saturday, Sept 18, 1999. They also used the site to show how the web site template works during the seminar on web page design. John is very pleased...

  10. For new business we talked of posting a sign about no soliciting in the neighborhood. Brenda Rollins is going to check with Farragut about posting a sign to that effect. She will also check on painting the sign posts brown to match the older street signs in the neighborhood.

  11. Adjourn
