HICKORY WOODS VANDALISM ALERT
Subject: HW Neighborhood Watch ALERT
From: Brenda Rollins <brendarollins@tds.net>
Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2006
To: Hickory Woods Neighbors
HW Neighbors,
As most of you know, our good neighbor, Greg Maples, on Valley Trail, has been very ill for some time. Today, his wife, Barbara, reported to us that someone egged their home in the night two nights ago. She is understandably nervous, for this marks the fourth time in recent months that vandals have done malicious things to their property. Last fall, on three different nights, someone filled paper bags with dog refuse and lit the bags in their front yard. One burned so close to the Maples´ home that Barbara feared it might catch on fire. Barbara has no idea why anyone wishes to harass them.
At her request, we are alerting all of you to keep on the lookout for future attacks on their property. We have notified the Knox County Sheriff´s Department; they are sending an additional patrol deputy to patrol Hickory Woods during the night for some time to come.
Please look out for anything suspicious day or night. If you see anything, the Sheriff´s Department asks that you try to get a description of the offenders and their car, should one be involved. Take down the license number and note which way the car is moving. Then immediately phone this number: 215-2444 and report your information.
If you need to send out additional general alert to the neighborhood, please contact Ann Durall, who is the Watch Captain for this section of Valley Trail. Her home number is in the Hickory Woods directory.
Thank you.

HICKORY WOODS INTRUDER ALERT...more, 4:00 pm, Feb 1, 2005
Hickory Woods Neighbors,
Also sometime before daylight on Sunday, someone left muddy footprints on the deck of David and Linda Brown, who live at the corner of Creekwood and Smith Road. The Browns did not see the person, but it is presumed this is the same intruder. He went first to glass patio doors and next to one of their double windows but, fortunately,he found them locked.
The sheriff's department is continuing to investigate. If you know of others in the neighborhood who have encountered the intruder in some way, please call me.
The sheriff's office says they know the man's name and where he lives in Maryville, but he is still at large.
If we learn more, we'll let you know.
Take care,
Warren
HICKORY WOODS INTRUDER ALERT
HW Neighbors,
Al (A. J.) Johnson, who lives at 12109 Creekwood Terrace, intercepted a white male intruder at about 6:30 this morning, January 30, 2005. A. J. opened his garage and had stepped back inside the house for a minute when someone entered the garage. Upon reentering his garage, A.J. saw a male inside the car, rummaging in the glove box.
The intruder ran into the dark, and A. J. gave chase. A. J. followed the man as far as the woods behind the Parkers' home in the Creekwood cul-de-sac. Then he returned home. He and Jeannie called the sheriff´s department.
Later it was learned that shortly before, someone attempted to steal a truck from one of our other neighbors on Rolling Creek, but the truck stalled in mud and was abandoned. It is believed that the lone man probably ran through yards, saw the Johnsons' garage open, and hoped to find car keys so he could make a getaway. In the meantime, sheriff´s deputies apprehended two other men in Ingles Parking lot who had tried to break into a Fox Den home at about 4 this morning. Those residents, however, awoke and foiled the attempt. The intruders had also unsuccessfully tried to break into a home in a nearby, unnamed neighborhood.
One of the two men the police caught claimed that a third, his brother, had attempted the robberies. That man, the sheriff believes, was the one in the Johnson´s garage. As far as we can learn, he is still at large.
We´ll let you know when we learn more.
Take care,
Warren
Subject: Car Break-In/VandalismTo: Hickory Woods
One of our neighbors on Smith Road had their car broken into in the past few days.
We'll get more details soon.......be on the lookout for anything that seems odd and be sure to lock all autos parked outside your garage.
Thanks--Charlotte
Here are more details...
Subject: Car Break-in DetailsOn Friday night, two cars at the same residence on Smith Road were broken into and several personal items were stolen (purse and computer equipment). These cars had alarms, there were outside security lights on, there were other out of town cars in the driveway as well, and members of the family were up until around 3:00am.
By 5:00am, the cars had been broken into, and all accounts by police were that these were teens who have been active in our area (and it's suspected that they have an idea of who it is), and that the teens have the sophistication to bring equipment (and/or methods) with them to keep a car alarm from sounding. Also, the large Winnebago down the street at the corner of Smith and Grigsby Chapel was broken into on the same night.
Somebody was very busy late last week.
Always remember to take items of value into your home at night to make your car(s) less of a worthwhile target!

Subject: Another incident from a neighbor on Hickory Woods Road:Theresa and I were on vacation last week and while gone the Paul's kept an eye on the house. Sometime after midnight on Wednesday someone completely trashed our mailbox as well as the mailbox post. The post was broken off at the ground which took some effort. It wasn't hit by a car as I looked for tire prints in the mulch as well as marks on the post but found none. I did however see the remnants of footprints which tells me the post was broken off by hand then the high impact plastic mailbox demolished. Gloria was out around midnight Wednesday and all was well so like I said, it happened sometime in the wee hours Thursday AM.
I reported it to the Sheriff's Dept more to find out if there were any other incidents in the area and of course there were several reports of mailbox baseball during the week.
Subject: Neighborhood Watch NoticeFrom the Rollins on Creekwood Terrace:
Sometime in the last couple weeks, someone came up our driveway and took the (good) radio from Jennifer's vintage Volkswagen.
That signals, of course, that somebody's roaming through the neighborhood, checking to see if vehicles and perhaps garages are open.
Subj: Security Light Reminder
Date: 9/12/02
From: Charlotte Klasson
There may have been a few more security lights installed in the neighborhood since last spring's rash of vandalism.
As a courtesy to neighbors, make sure that your lights are directed downward on the path or area you're wanting to light up. Falling branches, missing caps and such can change a light's direction so that it shines into a neighbor's house or away from the very spot you're concerned about.
I've even noticed several lights that can be blinding to someone driving by which probably isn't intended by the homeowner.
Please check this out before all of our leaves fall of the trees and the natural shields are gone for the winter. Your neighbors will thank you!

Did you notify the Sheriff? What other actions have you taken. Let me and Charlotte Klasson and your Neighborhood Watch person know. See your directory.
I will post the info you give me on the web.

And so did she...
We suggested that she call the sheriff anyway. Just so they know what is going on. Debbie, did you call them?

Date: 4/4/02 Well, Bill, I went onto the web and quickly found a site that has the kind of mail box that is resistant to vandals. Click on this MailBoxesOnly site to see what they offer.

Date: 3/5/02 Hello,
Some one broke into my Husband's van this past weekend. We now believe it was Saturday night, because that night our dogs were on the back porch, not in the side pen where they surely would have barked.
The thief broke a small front passenger window and unlocked the front door. He stole a large tool box (filled with tools), some hand power tools and a radio. We discovered the burglary on Monday morning about 6 AM as my husband was leaving for work. He was gone on Sunday and had not checked the van that day. Broken window was small and not noticeable from the house.
We reported it to the Knox County Sheriff's dept. Fortunately, around noon Monday the called and said that the Knoxville police had caught the person. My husband recovered about 50% of what was taken (we assume the rest was already 'fenced'). The Sheriff's Department described this person as a career criminal. He had only been out of jail about a week when they picked him up again. This was not a local teen. Though this person apparently does recruit young accomplices to help him.

January 27, 2002 -- John, please forward this notice to all of our residents' e-mails. Thanks!
January 15, 2002 -- I just read the email about the car in the yard. Made me get the nerve to say that I was sitting at my TV window about 5 days ago and a car had pulled up in front of a neighbor's home and a young boy (maybe 16-18) in a red shirt and jeans got out and with the headlights on him he relieved himself while the lights flicked at him. He calmly walked back to the waiting car and they continued on into the cul-de-sac in a whiteish van and drove away. I did not go to the door and act brave in any way for fear of what might happen to my family for complaining. It was very upsetting. I'd rather that my name not be used if you mention this. Thanks,
John,
John, would you please forward this to our neighbors? Thank you.
November 1, 2000. I didn't see any other address to send this to, so if need be pass it on. Thanks!
In June, 2000 about 50 CDs were stolen from a parked car on Creekwood Terrace. The Sheriff was notified.
Nov. 30, 1999 At 11:00 pm there was a break-in on Hickory Woods Road. When the owners arrived home, they knew something was wrong because the lights were on. They entered the house to find it trashed. The burglers had broken a window in the rear to get in. They ransacked the house doing lots of damage. Money and jewelery were stolen. The thieves left through the front door.
Nov. 18, 1999 At 11:47 pm there was break-in (no force) reported on Valley Trail. Owner said "he walked out to his garage to put something in the fridge and saw a white male in a dark jacket entering his garage through the side door." The owner yelled, 'police' and the person ran out of the garage. The owner said the door was unlocked and nothing appeared to be missing. The suspect's vehicle was found parked on the street in front of the residence. Police found a stolen license plate and other tools and property inside the car.
On Hickory Woods Road, owner reported that a wallet was stolen out of a parked vehicle. Owner did not report to Neighborhood watch captain, but did report the theft to the Sheriff's Department.
Monday, Nov 1, 1999 At 8:47 pm there was a prowler on Creekwood Terrace. Owner called the Sheriff's Department and an Officer responded to the residence for a prowler call. The owner told the deputy that earlier in the evening she heard someone trying to open the back door. The owner began called her husband's name and the noise stopped. She also told the Deputy that she didn't see anyone at the back door, but had been having problems with their childs ex-friend.
October, 1999. Theft of a flag and trash can. A decorative flag and pole were removed from a home on Rolling Creek. Also a large street trash can (like BFI or Waste Management cans) was taken from a residence. Keep your eyes open and report to your area block captain if you are suspicious of anything happening on your street. Someone also took our meeting sign from the entrance to the neighborhood. It was nicely decorated as a ghost to advertise our Halloween party. We need another, if you have a source (not hot). [Back to Neighborhood Watch page]
