sad face HICKORY WOODS VANDALISM ALERT
Subject: HW Neighborhood Watch ALERT
From: Brenda Rollins <brendarollins@tds.net>
Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2006
To: Hickory Woods Neighbors

HW Neighbors,

As most of you know, our good neighbor, Greg Maples, on Valley Trail, has been very ill for some time. Today, his wife, Barbara, reported to us that someone egged their home in the night two nights ago. She is understandably nervous, for this marks the fourth time in recent months that vandals have done malicious things to their property. Last fall, on three different nights, someone filled paper bags with dog refuse and lit the bags in their front yard. One burned so close to the Maples´ home that Barbara feared it might catch on fire. Barbara has no idea why anyone wishes to harass them.

At her request, we are alerting all of you to keep on the lookout for future attacks on their property. We have notified the Knox County Sheriff´s Department; they are sending an additional patrol deputy to patrol Hickory Woods during the night for some time to come.

Please look out for anything suspicious day or night. If you see anything, the Sheriff´s Department asks that you try to get a description of the offenders and their car, should one be involved. Take down the license number and note which way the car is moving. Then immediately phone this number: 215-2444 and report your information.

If you need to send out additional general alert to the neighborhood, please contact Ann Durall, who is the Watch Captain for this section of Valley Trail. Her home number is in the Hickory Woods directory.

Thank you.

sad face HICKORY WOODS INTRUDER ALERT...more, 4:00 pm, Feb 1, 2005

Hickory Woods Neighbors,

Also sometime before daylight on Sunday, someone  left muddy footprints on the deck of David and Linda Brown, who live at the corner of Creekwood and Smith Road. The Browns did not see the person, but it is presumed this is the same intruder. He went first to glass patio doors and next to one of their double windows but, fortunately,he found them locked.

The sheriff's department is continuing to investigate. If you know of others in the neighborhood who have encountered the intruder in some way, please call me.

The sheriff's office says they know the man's name and where he lives in Maryville, but he is still at large.

If we learn more, we'll let you know.

Take care,
Warren

sad face HICKORY WOODS INTRUDER ALERT

HW Neighbors,

Al (A. J.) Johnson, who lives at 12109 Creekwood Terrace, intercepted a white male intruder at about 6:30 this morning, January 30, 2005. A. J. opened his garage and had stepped back inside the house for a minute when someone entered the garage. Upon reentering his garage, A.J. saw a male inside the car, rummaging in the glove box.

The intruder ran into the dark, and A. J. gave chase. A. J. followed the man as far as the woods behind the Parkers' home in the Creekwood cul-de-sac. Then he returned home. He and Jeannie called the sheriff´s department.

Later it was learned that shortly before, someone attempted to steal a truck from one of our other neighbors on Rolling Creek, but the truck stalled in mud and was abandoned. It is believed that the lone man probably ran through yards, saw the Johnsons' garage open, and hoped to find car keys so he could make a getaway. In the meantime, sheriff´s deputies apprehended two other men in Ingles Parking lot who had tried to break into a Fox Den home at about 4 this morning. Those residents, however, awoke and foiled the attempt. The intruders had also unsuccessfully tried to break into a home in a nearby, unnamed neighborhood.

One of the two men the police caught claimed that a third, his brother, had attempted the robberies. That man, the sheriff believes, was the one in the Johnson´s garage. As far as we can learn, he is still at large.

We´ll let you know when we learn more.

Take care,

Warren

One of our neighbors on Smith Road had their car broken into in the past few days.

We'll get more details soon.......be on the lookout for anything that seems odd and be sure to lock all autos parked outside your garage.

Thanks--Charlotte

Here are more details...

On Friday night, two cars at the same residence on Smith Road were broken into and several personal items were stolen (purse and computer equipment). These cars had alarms, there were outside security lights on, there were other out of town cars in the driveway as well, and members of the family were up until around 3:00am.

By 5:00am, the cars had been broken into, and all accounts by police were that these were teens who have been active in our area (and it's suspected that they have an idea of who it is), and that the teens have the sophistication to bring equipment (and/or methods) with them to keep a car alarm from sounding. Also, the large Winnebago down the street at the corner of Smith and Grigsby Chapel was broken into on the same night.

Somebody was very busy late last week.

Always remember to take items of value into your home at night to make your car(s) less of a worthwhile target!

sad face Subject: Another incident from a neighbor on Hickory Woods Road:
From: Charlotte Klasson

Theresa and I were on vacation last week and while gone the Paul's kept an eye on the house. Sometime after midnight on Wednesday someone completely trashed our mailbox as well as the mailbox post. The post was broken off at the ground which took some effort. It wasn't hit by a car as I looked for tire prints in the mulch as well as marks on the post but found none. I did however see the remnants of footprints which tells me the post was broken off by hand then the high impact plastic mailbox demolished. Gloria was out around midnight Wednesday and all was well so like I said, it happened sometime in the wee hours Thursday AM.

I reported it to the Sheriff's Dept more to find out if there were any other incidents in the area and of course there were several reports of mailbox baseball during the week.

From the Rollins on Creekwood Terrace:

Sometime in the last couple weeks, someone came up our driveway and took the (good) radio from Jennifer's vintage Volkswagen.

That signals, of course, that somebody's roaming through the neighborhood, checking to see if vehicles and perhaps garages are open.

Subj: Security Light Reminder
Date: 9/12/02
From: Charlotte Klasson

There may have been a few more security lights installed in the neighborhood since last spring's rash of vandalism.

As a courtesy to neighbors, make sure that your lights are directed downward on the path or area you're wanting to light up. Falling branches, missing caps and such can change a light's direction so that it shines into a neighbor's house or away from the very spot you're concerned about.

I've even noticed several lights that can be blinding to someone driving by which probably isn't intended by the homeowner.

Please check this out before all of our leaves fall of the trees and the natural shields are gone for the winter. Your neighbors will thank you!

Subj: Vandalism, as acts of terrorism
From: deborah_ramsey@yahoo.com (Deborah Ramsey)
To: hckrywds@aol.com

I have been as distressed as any about the wave of vandalism in our nice and, normally, quiet neighborhood. And from this page, it looked like there hadn't been any more in a while. I had hoped that the little terrorists had either moved on or that the parents were keeping closer watch on their miscreants. But sadly, the wave of vandalism continues.

Last night (Monday, July 8, 2002), about 10:30PM, someone set fire to what appeared to be trash on our front porch. They knocked on the door to alert us and ran away, no doubt to a "safe" distance to observe our reactions. Needless to say, we were not pleased.

I don't consider what's been going on in our neighborhood as childish pranks. These are acts of terrorism - acts that inspire fear, worry and anxiety.

Outraged,

Debbie & Tim

Hi John

Tim said we should have called you at the least, but we're right in the middle of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and have packed our directory as well as phone books. A bit short-sighted of us. I hated to dial 911, as it wasn't a real emergency, nothing life threatening, Tim got the fire put out pretty quickly. What upset me most was this took place right under the American flag we have flying for the Fourth holiday last week.

Anyway... I got the Sheriff's # off the web site today and if we have any more problems, will definitely call.

Thanks. And sorry for the tone of my email. I'm very upset right now. Not to mention scared and dreading tonight.

Debbie

We suggested that she call the sheriff anyway. Just so they know what is going on. Debbie, did you call them?

A neighbor had a car stolen in the past day or so, so please take note:

The car was for sale. The person came just before dark to look at it and drove off in it. Never came back. Just like that.

I have contacted the Sheriff's Department about having a meeting this month about our problems.

Thanks--Charlotte

Just wanted to drop a note to let you know that the mailbox vandals were at work again last night.

When I got up this AM I noticed my mailbox door open so at the prompting of my wife, took a look and found a near 25lb landscape stone lying in the street adjacent to my now dysfunctional mailbox.

This is now the 3rd time in a year that my mailbox has been vandalized. The previous 2 attempts to render the box useless failed but I do believe that this time we will have to send it to the mailbox graveyard. I noticed several other mailboxes in the area between my home & Smith Road that were damaged (some from the last time mine got hit) and wondered if anyone else experienced damage last night?

Also, are you aware of any manufacturers of indestructible mailboxes???

Well, Bill, I went onto the web and quickly found a site that has the kind of mail box that is resistant to vandals. Click on this MailBoxesOnly site to see what they offer.

Subj: Noticed Theft from Garage

From: Charlotte Klasson, Neighborhood Watch Coordinator

A neighbor on Hickory Woods Rd. alerted me today that her family realized that their leaf blower was missing from the garage. She can't be quite sure when it was stolen because it hasn't been used recently, but it isn't there now.

She will let the Sheriff's Department know that this has occurred so our area will continue to be patrolled.

Remember to keep your garage door closed and any side doors locked even when you are home.

Thanks--Charlotte

Subject: Burglary

Hello,

Some one broke into my Husband's van this past weekend. We now believe it was Saturday night, because that night our dogs were on the back porch, not in the side pen where they surely would have barked.

The thief broke a small front passenger window and unlocked the front door. He stole a large tool box (filled with tools), some hand power tools and a radio. We discovered the burglary on Monday morning about 6 AM as my husband was leaving for work. He was gone on Sunday and had not checked the van that day. Broken window was small and not noticeable from the house.

We reported it to the Knox County Sheriff's dept. Fortunately, around noon Monday the called and said that the Knoxville police had caught the person. My husband recovered about 50% of what was taken (we assume the rest was already 'fenced'). The Sheriff's Department described this person as a career criminal. He had only been out of jail about a week when they picked him up again. This was not a local teen. Though this person apparently does recruit young accomplices to help him.

Just thought I would let you know that on Jan. 12 at 2:30 in the morning our doorbell rang-- It scared us --- my husband went to the door and could tell that it was kids-- a small light was out in the street -- he thought it might be firecrackers or something -- Needless to say we were awake for the rest of the night ! He found a small flashlight in the street with dead batteries when he went out to get the paper! So they dropped the flashlight!! I sure hate that we are having this happen in our neighborhood! Just thought I would reply to this message! We live on Leatherwood Ln!

sad faceJanuary 27, 2002 -- John, please forward this notice to all of our residents' e-mails. Thanks!

A neighbor on Hickory Woods had their mailbox smashed and broken in the past couple of days (around Jan 25). It sounds like we have an ongoing problem that everyone should be made aware of.

Please call the police immediately if you witness anything suspicious or if you have had something similar done on your property.

Egging cars and smashing and damaging property is behavior that cannot be tolerated as a simple prank.

If you have children who may be involved, make sure that they know people will notify the authorities.

sad faceJanuary 15, 2002 -- I just read the email about the car in the yard. Made me get the nerve to say that I was sitting at my TV window about 5 days ago and a car had pulled up in front of a neighbor's home and a young boy (maybe 16-18) in a red shirt and jeans got out and with the headlights on him he relieved himself while the lights flicked at him. He calmly walked back to the waiting car and they continued on into the cul-de-sac in a whiteish van and drove away. I did not go to the door and act brave in any way for fear of what might happen to my family for complaining. It was very upsetting. I'd rather that my name not be used if you mention this. Thanks,

sad faceJohn,

F.Y.I. This evening (January 12, 2002) around 10:20 pm, one of our cars was egged as we drove into the SD. It occurred just where the creek crosses under Hickory Woods Road at the Bottom of the hill. After I washed the egg off, I returned to the scene with a spot light and sure enough, we "flushed" the two offenders. One was taller than the other and we didn't see him well. The second was a smaller boy (I think) wearing a blue coat with a horizontal white or night-glow strip across the back. When we spooked them, they were hiding in the bushes on the northeast side of the road. The ran back towards the entrance of the SD ( through the Staups, and behind the Sferrazza's yards, into the Sommer's yard on Valley Brook. We were chasing all the way in the car. We beat them to Rolling Creek Road, and they turned and retraced their foot steps.

A few minutes later we encountered a tall blond 15(?) year old walking along Hickory Woods Road. He claimed his name was Rick and that he had just moved into the neighborhood about three weeks ago. I suspect he was one of the perpetrators but am not sure. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but he was breating hard and seemed a bit rattled. When I asked him what he was doing out, he claimed he had seen the lights and wondered what was going on. Interesting thing is that he claimed to live "at the foot of the hill" and he was walking back into the SD, so I wonder.

Anyone who has a 9-12 year old, slight chubby kid with a blue coat having a horizontal white stripe across the back has an egg thrower on their hands. ...

Thanks, John...

BTW: the egg did damage the paint at the point of impact, despite the fact that we had it cleaned off in only about 15 minutes. Thankfully, it didn't eat completely through the color coat, but it did eat into it. Parents need to let their kids know that egging cars does real damage that is expensive to repair. I've seen cars that had to be completely repainted after being egged by vandals...

sad faceJohn, would you please forward this to our neighbors? Thank you.

Last night, (Monday Jan. 7, 2002) at about 8:30 p.m. someone drove a vehicle through my front yard for the sole purpose of knocking down my children's snowman. The result of this thoughtless behavior is a damaged front yard, parts of which will have to be reseeded. The purpose of this email is to ask parents to talk to their children about the consequenses of their actions and to explain to children and teenagers that pranks such as smashing mailboxes or driving through yards are not funny, cost both money and time to repair, and hurt the feelings of those affected. We live in a great neighborhood. Let's not lower it a notch it by accepting this type of behavior. Thanks for your support.

sad faceNovember 1, 2000. I didn't see any other address to send this to, so if need be pass it on. Thanks!
This is for "Neighborhood Watch"

Last night while trick-or-treating with my child and friends, a white jeep stopped at a neighbor's house and broadcast obscenities from a car speaker or megaphone. I approached them and reminded them that young kids were out on the street tonight. They didn't seem to understand what I was talking about, so I told them I had heard some of their words that were not appropriate. Hickory Woods residents later apologized to us and said they had asked the offenders to leave. Less than an hour later the jeep returned followed closely by two other vehicles. More inappropriate language was heard as they sped away.

Thank you

sad faceIn June, 2000 about 50 CDs were stolen from a parked car on Creekwood Terrace. The Sheriff was notified.

sad faceNov. 30, 1999 At 11:00 pm there was a break-in on Hickory Woods Road. When the owners arrived home, they knew something was wrong because the lights were on. They entered the house to find it trashed. The burglers had broken a window in the rear to get in. They ransacked the house doing lots of damage. Money and jewelery were stolen. The thieves left through the front door.

sad faceNov. 18, 1999 At 11:47 pm there was break-in (no force) reported on Valley Trail. Owner said "he walked out to his garage to put something in the fridge and saw a white male in a dark jacket entering his garage through the side door." The owner yelled, 'police' and the person ran out of the garage. The owner said the door was unlocked and nothing appeared to be missing. The suspect's vehicle was found parked on the street in front of the residence. Police found a stolen license plate and other tools and property inside the car.

sad faceOn Hickory Woods Road, owner reported that a wallet was stolen out of a parked vehicle. Owner did not report to Neighborhood watch captain, but did report the theft to the Sheriff's Department.

sad faceMonday, Nov 1, 1999 At 8:47 pm there was a prowler on Creekwood Terrace. Owner called the Sheriff's Department and an Officer responded to the residence for a prowler call. The owner told the deputy that earlier in the evening she heard someone trying to open the back door. The owner began called her husband's name and the noise stopped. She also told the Deputy that she didn't see anyone at the back door, but had been having problems with their childs ex-friend.

sad faceOctober, 1999. Theft of a flag and trash can. A decorative flag and pole were removed from a home on Rolling Creek. Also a large street trash can (like BFI or Waste Management cans) was taken from a residence. Keep your eyes open and report to your area block captain if you are suspicious of anything happening on your street. Someone also took our meeting sign from the entrance to the neighborhood. It was nicely decorated as a ghost to advertise our Halloween party. We need another, if you have a source (not hot).
