Regular Trash

Waste Connection (formerly BFI) has given Hickory Woods a discount because we have enough users of their service. Check that you are getting the new rate of $12.00 per month. Their number is 522-8161. Pickup is on Wednesdays. If you are using another service, check with Melissa Mustard.

Bulky items that won't fit in the trash can are also collected. Up to 5 items can be put out for collection. Examples include a biicycle, large appliances, furniture or tires. This does not include building materials. If there is any question about the suitability of any item for pickup with the regular trash, call Waste Connection at 522-8161.

Computers and monitors (only one at a time) will be accepted as trash.

Household Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous waste can be disposed of FREE at the waste transfer facility on Baxter Ave in Knoxville. See the map below.

What is household hazardous waste? It includes the following items:

Toxic/Poisonous:

Capable of causing injury or death through ingestionn, inhalation, or skin absorption. Such as bleach, antifreeze, pesticides and fertilizers.

Corrosives:

Can eat away materials and living tissue by chemical action. Examples are drain openers, toilet and oven cleaners.

Reactive:

Can react with air, water or other substances and result in explosions or the genration of heat or toxic fumes, such aa peroxide, ammonia and mothballs.

Flamable/Combustible:

Can ignite and burn at a relatively low temperature, presenting a fire hazard, like gasoline, charcoal lighter and alcohol.

Here are some rules for handling household hazardous waste:

• Use only for the intended purpose.
• Follow the directions.
• Never mix products.
• Keep stuff in the original containers.
• Keep the containers securely sealed.
• Store in a dry, ventillated area.
• Don't store gasoline or propane inside.
• Keep the information about the use, storage and disposal.
• Transport materials in the trunk. Keep the container upright and immobilized. If the container is leaking pack it in kitty liter or newspapers and place in a sealable container like a bucket or bag and label the contents.

The HHW Collection Center is located at the Solid Waste Management Facility at 1033 Elm Street. Hours of operation are as follows:

• Sunday-Monday Closed
• Tuesday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
• Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 12 noon

Those products that are accepted and those that are not are shown on this page. It is worth while to note that no pressurized tanks are acceptable, but it follows from that that EMPTY pressurized tanks ARE acceptable. Read these lists carefully.
