Volunteer Opportunities at DiscoverET.org

DiscoverET.org is an independent, nonprofit, community network that is sustained by the contributions of many dedicated volunteers in our region.

If you wish to volunteer, please call 456-7969 or email us. Please put "Volunteer at DiscoverET" in the subject line.

Several types of volunteer opportunities are available:
  (1) Give hope to a homebound senior.
  (2) Teach computer skills at a senior center.
  (3) Contribute to DiscoverET.org, East Tennessee's nonprofit Web portal.
  (4) Help a nonprofit set up a Website or learn Web and Internet skills.
  (5) Be a Quickie Volunteer -- Address a specific need related to one of these programs.
  (6) Join the Board of Directors.

CHIPS (Computers for Homebound & Isolated Persons)
  • Mentor -- Teach a CHIPS participant how to use a computer, e-mail, a Web browser and Windows 2000. Teaching manual provided.
  • CHIPS Member Liaison -- Interact with CHIPS participants, primarily by e-mail, to help them achieve program goals such as using e-mail and search engines.
  • Computer Refurbisher -- Refurbish used computers, upgrading memory, installing Windows 2000 and other programs, and making sure computers are ready to install.
  • Field Technician -- Install and repair the computers of CHIPS clients.
Teach Computer Skills
  • Instructor, Computer Classes -- Teach computer skills to seniors at one of several area senior centers (Corryton, Loudon, Oak Ridge and Sevierville).
  • Computer Aide -- Assist an instructor... or teach skills one-on-one in the computer lab.
Contribute to DiscoverET.org
  • Member, System Administration Team -- Join the group of technical experts who keep the DiscoverET.org server up and running.
  • Calendar Editor & Promoter -- Record community events in the DiscoverET.org calendar. Contact arts and community groups to inform them about free calendar listings to publicize their events.
  • Directory Editor -- Find Websites in your community that are not already listed in the DiscoverET.org community directory, and add them.
Help a Nonprofit
  • Member, Web Design Team -- Join the team of volunteers who design DiscoverET.org-hosted Websites for small nonprofit organizations. We teach nonprofits to maintain their own Websites.
  • Instructor, Web Design -- Teach an introductory course in Web Design and site maintenance to non-profits whose Web sites are hosted by DiscoverET.org.
  • Instructor, Web Tools -- Teach a course in blogging, group email lists, podcasting, photo manipulation or related topics.
  • Tech Support, Mailing Lists -- Provide technical assistance to groups with DiscoverET.org mailing lists, using the Mailman software.
Short-Term Volunteer Opportunities
  • Locate a Large Monitor -- The CHIPS program is looking for a 19-inch or larger monitor for an 84-year-old client with poor vision. We need someone to make calls to local businesses that might donate either a used flatscreen or CRT monitor of that size.
  • Solicit Hardware for CHIPS -- CHIPS spends $40-$50 to upgrade each donated computer. We need to reduce this cost. This job would require about 10-12 hours calling and visiting local computer and office supply stores to request donations of surge protectors.
  • DiscoverET.org: Annual Membership Letter -- Help prepare the mailing to our nonprofit members in early December. Folding letters, stuffing & stamping envelopes, etc.
  • DiscoverET.org Websites -- Use email or telephone to contact nonprofits with DiscoverET.org Websites and give instructions for switching from KORRnet to DiscoverET.org logos on their Websites.
DiscoverET.org Leadership Team
  • Member, Board of Directors -- Join the folks who oversee the financial well-being of KORRnet, establish policy, and plan for the future of community networking in our region. Application is required.
