ABOUT THE BISHOP SHEA COUNCIL HALL

On June 6, 2006, a meeting of the Knights of Columbus Council 645 Home Association was held, at which time the members voted to approve purchase of the Gospel Light Baptist Church building at 6515 Millertown Pike.

The Purchase was completed by Grand Knight Jack McCusker with the assistance of Bert Benedict and other officers. The Council began moving in and performing repairs in July. Significant repairs were undertaken by Philip MacDonald, a member of Council 645 and a local contractor. Repairs were made to the roof, siding, and interior. Further work days included painting, rearrangement of the pews, hanging Council pictures, and removal/replacement of the carpets.

The first Business Meeting was held in the hall on July 18, 2006.

During the September 5, 2006 Business Meeting, the membership approved a motion naming the hall after Bishop Shea.

The official dedication of the Council Hall is scheduled for Saturday, September 30.

OFFER MADE ON POTENTIAL COUNCIL HALL

NEW COUNCIL HALL PENDING APPROVAL OF HOME ASSOCIATION

At the May 2, 2006 Business Meeting of the Council, a Home Association committee was appointed to investigate an opportunity to purchase a former Lutheran church building on Millertown Pike. A subsequent visit to the property was made by this commmittee, including Bert Benedict, Jeff Emitt, Hal Emitt, John Swindeman, Jim Cortese, Malcolm Wells, and Wes Sheedy. During the visit, repair needs were identified and the suitability of the property determined. A subseqent visit was made with Jack McCusker and Philip MacDonald.

Following these visits, an officer's meeting was held on May 9 to discuss the opportunity. Attention was paid to the need for notification of the membership and a formal Home Association vote prior to closure or signing of any contract, but it was the agreement of the majority of the officers present that proceding with an offer and payment of earnest money was allowable under the Home Association charter.

As of the May 16 Social Meeting in honor of Jeff Emitt, the Home Association's offer to the current owners of the property had been accepted, and earnest money paid to secure the opportunity to purchase the property. Grand Knight McCusker addressed the financing of the purchase and repairs and the benefits of the purchase of the property. Special notice is to be sent to the membership by mail, and at the next Business Meeting, to be held at Immaculate Conception on June 6, a Home Association meeting will be held to vote on the purchase of the property.

If you have any questions about this purchase, please direct them to a Council officer, or by email to kc645@korrnet.org. Pictures of the church building follow.

TEMPORARY COUNCIL HALL VOTED IN

During the Home Association Meeting on December 7th at IC, a vote was taken on a proposal to rent the house at 2406 Magnolia Avenue with an option to buy. If the proposal is acceptable to Catholic Charities, then Council 645 will have a temporary Council Hall. More news on this developing situation is certainly on the way. The last Council Hall, also on Magnolia, was sold in May of 2000.

Home Association Meeting

During the December 7th Business Meeting, after all committee reports, we will conduct a Home Association Meeting to put to a vote the proposal to rent, with an option to buy, the Parent Place Home located at 2406 Magnolia Ave, as a new Council Hall. If you have not done so, you may contact Bert Benedict to visit the home before the meeting.

Home Association Meeting

As a member of KOC Council 645, you are also, de facto, a member of our Home Association. We will be holding the next meeting of the Association on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at 8:00 pm in the basement of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. The specific topic on the agenda is whether to rent, to purchase, or to do nothing with a house that has been made available to us at 2416 Magnolia Avenue. This potential new council hall is located four blocks east of , and on the same side of the road as our previous council hall on Magnolia Avenue. If you would like to view the inside of this house (Catholic Charities' former Parent Place) before the Home Association meeting, please contact Bert Benedict. He will make the appopriate arrangements. If you wish to ask questions, express your opinions, or participate in this important decision, please attend the meeting. We look forward to seeing you there.
