Grand Knight's Reports. 9/2000 to
6/2004 June 9,
2004 Hello Brothers, Well, the 101st Annual
Tennessee State Convention adjourned about noon on Sunday
April 25, 2004 with a new slate of State Officers. These
Officers are listed below: LADIES, many thanks to all of you who
have given your time participating in the many functions we
have had this year. We look forward to seeing you again.
Thank-you! Brothers all, this is my last newsletter
for the current Columbian year. It is with pride that I step
down as your Grand Knight and will cheerfully welcome in the
new officers to be elected on June 15th. Due to my work
schedule and helping Rachelle recover from another extensive
surgery, I am unable to take a second term as Grand Knight.
Thank-you for your trust and confidence by electing me last
year to lead our council and earn some State awards. As a
whole, our council has worked very hard this year and that
is what makes "Those Men They Call Knights". The council has
taught me a great deal about working with others, how to
maintain self-discipline, patience, adn most of all,
charity. We all need to continue to be worthy of
the title, a Knight of Columbus through the four principles
of our order, CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNITY and PATRIOTISM. For
in living those principles do we pave the way for those new
Knights and prospective new Knights to be taught what was
given over 120 years ago. How humbling are those principles
that we work to maintain. Our reward is not of this earth,
but of what may be gained when we meet our maker. We are looking forward to an end of the
Columbian Year Party at PGK Jim Cortese's new house. He is
trying to figure out when it will be held and how many will
attend. Please call him and give him your recommendations.
Thanks Jim!!! [Long 4th Degree Report Here - Read
your hardcopy newsletter - the FS is tired of
typing] Some of you third degree members, find
out when we are having another 4th Degree Exemplification
and sign-up. The 4th Degree Color Corp is always looking for
new members to participate in honoring the Bishop in his
functions and many other events. Well Brothers, always remember the
Principles of Our Order, CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNITY AND
PATRIOTISM in all our thoughts, in what we say to each other
and what we do in our acts and deeds. It has been an honor
to serve you this past year. Fraternally and
respectfully yours, Paul M.
Rodarte Grand
Knight May 1, 2004 Hello Brothers, Well, the 101st Annual
Tennessee State Convention adjourned about noon on Sunday
April 25, 2004 with a new slate of State Officers. These
Officers are listed below: From Council 645 located in the great
city of Knoxville, congratulations to these new officers and
may they have very successful terms of office. Two
individuals were voted on to be our State Insurance
Representatives to the Annual Supreme Council to be held in
Dallas, Texas this year. From our own council, SK John
Sholly and the current State Master of the 4th Degree, SK
John King has accepted the rough duty of representing our
state in Dallas. Be sure to take along your sunscreen
guys! Speaking of elections, our own council
elections are scheduled for June. Please think about whom
you would like to be your elected leaders of the 4th oldest
council in Tennessee. [Long 4th Degree Report Here - Read
your hardcopy newsletter - the FS is tired of
typing] As usual, worthy Brothers, there are a
lot of events and activities that are always in need of your
help and support. For example, help is always asked for at
each or our two Pancake Breakfasts. If that is all you do in
a Knights of Columbus year, great, we would love to see
you. Mother's Day is rapidly approaching.
Brothers, please, please remember what all those wonderful
ladies, (Mom's) have done for us. Without the Mom's and
ladies to help us out, where would we be today? The Ladies
are our confidants, healers, givers, friends and sometimes,
our biggest fans. So, Worthy Brothers, show your
appreciation to all of our hardworking ladies and take
them out on Saturday May 15 to the Spaghetti Dinner at
Immaculate Conception to start the Mother's Day Celebrating.
THANK YOU LADIES FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO!!!! Ladies, you will
receive a sincere something to show our appreciation to
you! Also, the Right to Life function will be
at the corner of Merchants and Clinton from 9-5. Brother
Paul Dunn is the chairman. Please talk to him for more
details. Memorial Day is coming up at the end of
the month. Please call Troy Brenny, Doc Davidson, Greg
McGinnis, Wes Sheedy, Mike Drake or myself for ideas.
Picnic, remember those that have served our country such as
our veterans both living and gone before us. Ideas,
Ideas. June, there will be an Ice Cream Social
at Immaculate Conception to help raise funds for their 150th
Church Anniversary. Help is very much asked for. Well Brothers, always remember the
Principles of Our Order, CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNITY AND
PATRIOTISM in all our thoughts, deeds in what we say to each
other and what we do to others. Fraternally
yours, Paul M.

Council 645 December,
2003 Dear Brothers, There are a lot of functions planned for
the upcoming months. We are in the midst of many historical
times. Events that have happened as we have seen, events
that are occurring as we read this letter, events that will
happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and so on. Let us be
mindful of who we are and what organization we represent. We
all have taken our vows at least once, some many times. We
are in the midst of a very holy time of our church year; let
us all continue to be brothers in all we say and all we do.
If a brother has wronged us in some way, let us pray that we
learn from our Biggest Brother who gave us his life so that
we may live, on how to live and forgive. Many, many warm and sincere thanks and
gratitude to all the Ladies that have helped us so greatly
during all the years we, as Knights of Columbus have been
around to help others. Without ALL your help and assistance,
dear Ladies, the Knights and Sir Knights could not
accomplish near as much as is accomplished. Thank-you for
all your patience, kindness, support and your generous love
to the Knights. The January Newsletter will contain the
schedules for the First, Second, possibly a Third Degree,
and of course, the Fourth Degree Exemplification in March.

2003 Dear Brothers, There are a lot of functions planned for
the upcoming months. We are planning to have a Superbowl Party
somewhere. Ideas on the place and menu items are
appreciated. What about a Chili Cook off prior to the Party?
Come to the meetings and help. Membership is up! Supreme gave us a goal
of recruiting 5 members this year. We have recruited 8 so
far. Let's get our newest members to the meetings and get
those potential men we would like to call
"Knights." Please check out the attached events
calendar. Our Knights of Columbus Order cannot function
unless we have the cooperation and support of all its
members. Yes, there is always a core group of people who
seem to do the majority of the work most of the time. All
Brother Knights are always welcome to everything. ATTENTION TO ALL 2ND DEGREE MEMBERS. This
is the LAST 3rd Degree for this year at Our Lady of Fatima
Church on Sunday, November 23rd, 2003. Candidates and
Sponsors must be there between 12:45 and 1 PM. Degree starts
at 2PM with dinner to follow afterwards. This is a must for
those members who wish to become a full member of the
Knights of Columbus. Upon attaining this degree, a member
will become eligible to become an officer to further assist
the Council. Of course, there is also the 4th Degree of
which its principle is Patriotism. The Veterans Day Dinner was warmly
received and awards were given out. The attendees were
surprised that the Council hadn't done this before, but
would like this to be an annual event. As good as the Order is, it cannot
function without the warm and giving support of the Ladies.
And so, Ladies, many, many THANKS for all you do and for
your kind-heartedness. Thank you ALL for everything you do and
ALL your support for our Council. Paul M.

2003 Dear Brothers, There are a lot of functions planned for
the upcoming months. Please get some refrigerator magnets
and put up attached calendar so you can plan to attend when
you can. October 18, 2003 is St.
Joseph School Fall Festival - All
Day. Knights are asked to help out with the
parking. Sunday, October 12, 2003 is Columbus Day.
Let's remember what our Degree vows are that we have all
taken. Remember, the Knights of Columbus organization is a
mighty group of volunteers. For what we do here on earth, we
pray for whatever our Dear Lord would like us to have or
share. Remember that, as members of the Knights of
Columbus. Charity: Be kind to each other. We are
here to work with each other, not to argue and fight. We are
Brothers, united to give of the kindness and love we all
have inside each and every one of us. Unity: Brothers, as Knights, together we
are united throughout the world to serve and protect our
Holy Church. We unite to uphold the ideals that Fr. McGivney
has given us and has charged us with the responsibility as
being a Knight of Columbus. Fraternity: Fraternalism. Being together.
Being Brothers all working toward goals that have been set
down before us by our founding fathers and the Supreme
Council. Are we maintaining fraternity with each other in
our daily lives? Remember: We are just a small part of
this very wonderful organization. Let us ensure that when
people see us, they will say that: "These Men, they are
called Knights." Other news: Oktoberfest in the Bavarian
Alps. Actually this particular Oktoberfest will be held at
the Knights of Columbus Activity Park, on Hwy 70 East, in
Crossville, TN. Dates are Oct 10-11 and will kick-off at
2:00pm CENTRAL Daylight Time on Friday with a traditional
tapping of the keg. There will be several bands from across
the county coming to perform. Come join the fun. Thank you Brother Knights for all your
hard work and support so far this year. There is still a lot
more fun and activities to come. Vivat

Rodarte Grand Knight,
Council 645 August 1,
2003 Dear Brother Knights, Well, another Columbian year has started
and it looks like there will be a lot on the calendar. I am
welcoming and inviting those Knights that would like to
participate in just Activities and not the meetings, to come
forward as there will be a lot of functions going to be
planned for this year. I would like to welcome our newest
Knights, Seminarian Steven Bell, CSP, Brian Dufrene, and
Pisut Vongkasemsiri who survived their First Degree that the
State Council conducted at the end of the State Kick-off
Meeting. Gentlemen, our council welcomes you with open arms
and a whole lot of activities to participate in. Speaking of a First Degree, I would like
to schedule a First Degree for the others who have submitted
a Form 100 on the first meeting in August. First Degree to
start at 7:00pm. Our Worthy District Deputy is going to
coordinate with the team for a practice prior to that date.
The following individuals have submitted a Form 100, let's
get them informed: Malcom Wells; proposer Paul Rodarte, Dat
Tran; Jim Cortese, John Kiernan; Jim Cortese, Robert Hunt;
Paul Rodarte, Michael Reyda; Greg McGinnis. An important part of being a Knight, is,
having the spouses, friends, and significant others
supporting our Fraternal organization. Without the spouses
and others, the Knights of Columbus would be lacking in many
functions. Thank you ladies and families for all your
wonderful support! On Tuesday, July 22, 2003, the officers
were installed at Holy Ghost. Dinner was held at the Texas
Roadhouse in the Easttown Mall. Father Mankel assisted the
District Deputy, John Sholly in installing the
officers. On Tuesday, July 29, 2003, there is a
planning meeting starting at SEVEN, 7:00 p.m. at Immaculate
Conception Church. Lastly, there is a Pancake Breakfast at
Immaculate Conception on Sunday, July 27, 2003 starting at
7:30 a.m., and at Holy Ghost on Sunday, August 3, 2003.
Workers need to be there at 7:30 a.m. You do not have to
work all day! If you would like to work about half a day,
please do so. Believe me, both groups can use a lot of help
on these recurring activities every month. Please put these
days on your calendars! Brothers, many, many thanks for all you
do and for all your prayers. We ask your continued support
and prayers. Vivat

2003 Dear Brother Knights and
Families, I want to take this time to
thank everyone for a year well done! All the officers
fulfilled their jobs and did great. We had a good attendance
at the meeting last month with our guest speaker, Sr.
Bernadette. Thanks to John Swindeman for organizing her
appearance, Rochelle for preparation of the food and to Paul
Rodarte for filling in for me while I was recuperating from
my sickness and absence this past month. We had a great year
and I believe we accomplished quite a few activities. Thanks
to Fr. Mankel for all his prayers and encouragement to our
council, and last year's officers and the upcoming new
officers. Lastly, we may not have won any awards in Memphis,
but our greatest award is all of you and the support we gave
each other. I truly enjoyed serving my duties as your Grand
Knight, and really appreciate all your prayers. Thank
you! Vivat

Families, I want to thank everyone for
your prayers while I am very sick. God was at my side all
the way. I am currently in rehabilitation and getting
stronger everyday. Thanks to all the people who helped with
the Easter Egg Hunt last month. I heard that we had a lot of
children and they had fun getting the prizes. Please
continue to pray for my health and strength in returning to
the meetings. I really appreciate your prayers. Thank
you! Vivat

2003 Dear Brother Knights and
Families, We have had a very busy
month and April will be just as busy. Daylight saving time
goes into effect on April 6th and that means clocks must be
set ahead one hour (spring forward). Our annual Easter Egg
Hunt for the children ages 2-12 will be on schedule for
Saturday, April 19 at St. Joseph School at 10:00 AM. We can
use the help and any ideas that you have. Let me know. I
would like to wish everyone an Easter Blessing! At Easter
morning Mass you'll have a very special place in all our
prayers. May the risen Christ fill you with His light,
grace, and everlasting joy! Happy Easter! Vivat

2003 Dear Brother Knights and
Families, Did you know that the
Knights of Columbus was founded and chartered in New Haven,
CT on March 29, 1882 in the basement of St. Mary's Church? A
young priest, Fr. Michael J. McGivney and a handful of
parishioners formed the Catholic Family Fraternal Service
Organization known as the Knights of Columbus. The Knights
sponsor programs to feed hungry people, and aid the elderly,
shelter those who are homeless, guide young people, assist
individuals with mental and physical handicaps and much
more. If you know of someone that would like to be a member,
please hand them a Form 100 and sign them up
today!. Vivat

2003 Dear Brother Knights and
Families, The first six months went so
fast, I can't believe that its gone by so quickly. All
officers have been pretty faithful and coming to the
meetings. I couldn't ask for a better group of men. They
have been very helpful to me. We have been very busy
throughout the year with the monthly Breakfasts,
First, Second, and Third Degree, M.R.
Drive, Cleaning and
workdays at different charities, St.
Joseph's School festivals
and our Socials.
There are many things coming up this new year and I ask you
to please join in where help is needed. Vivat

2002 HAPPY NEW YEAR! Dear Members, we had a great
Christmas Social
at the Metz's home last month. Had plenty of food, great
company, Christmas caroling with many beautiful voices, and
Santa surprised the children with many gifts for them and
the needy children. If you missed this one, you missed a
great time. We want to thank Sharon Metz and family for
opening up their home for this special occasion. Thanks to
the people who have helped me through the year and the
officers who have done so much. Thanks to our Chaplain, Fr.
Mankel for being there when called upon, Associate Paster,
Fr. John O'Neil, and to Fr. Jim Haley, Pastor
of
Immaculate Conception
Church for the use
of the church for the meetings. I couldn't have done it
alone. Thank you! Now, I want to take this time to wish you
and yours a Blessed and Happy prosperous New
Year! Vivat

remember your neighbors who are struggling to keep going
from day to day. During this very special time of the year,
there can be no greater blessing than helping others. May
the Christmas season bring you and your family health and
happiness. My wife Leslie and I would like to wish you all a

2002 Last month, we lost a very
fine man, Chase Wilson. He died from a cardiac arrest at his
home. Fr. John O'Neil and I attended the full Military
Funeral at St. Bridgett's Catholic Church in Dayton, TN.
Chase was our State Treasurer and a very hard worker. Please
keep in your prayers his wife Diane, daughter, Brittany and
the rest of the family. May his soul and the souls of the
faithful departed rest in peace, Amen! There is a large void
in the State with the loss of Chase! Also, let us remember in our
prayers Stue Metz's family in the one year memorial. Mass at
6:30 A.M. is offered for his intention on Monday, October 7
at Holy
Ghost Church.
Remember Pray the Rosary daily. I would like to see everyone
attend the 100th Anniversary Mass at Immaculate
Conception Church at
6:00 P.M. October 4, followed by a spaghetti dinner. Please
RSVP to Paul Rodarte at 673-5040. Don't forget the

2002 Did you know that I am the
first Native American Indian elected to be Grand Knight?
I've been in Knoxville for almost 22 years and worked at
TVA. I was one of three Indians that were selected to work
on the Bell Font Nuclear plant at Hollywood, AL and then
transferred to Knoxville with TVA. In the 80's I met my
wife, Leslie. I became a Knight in December 1994 and a Sir
Knight in 1995. With my job the way it is, I try to be as
active as I can. Leslie and I are members of
Holy
Ghost Church and
love every minute of it. Fr. Hankel was the pastor at that
time and very helpful to us. We have many goals to meet
in Council 645. One of them is to increase our
Membership,
have Family
Socials, work on the
MR
Drive, monthly
Breakfast
at Holy Ghost and Immaculate
Conception Church,
help our chaplain, Fr. Xavier Mankel, the St.
Joseph Festival and
do more charitable work in our community. So, as you can
see, I'm going to need your help, members, wives, and
children. Maybe one or two families can host a social or
outing in the future. Plans are pending on the first family
outing and I could use your advice and suggestions. Please
pray for our new officers and me. Vivat

Nobody can do everything, but everybody can do something!
October is Respect Life month! As all members of Council 645 should be aware, East Tennessee Right to Life is running a Pro-Life advertisement in the Knoxville News-Sentinel for six consecutive weeks. Our Council has already provided financial support. Brother Paul Dunn III, Director of East Tennessee Right To Life, has asked me to encourage all members to support this most worthy project. If you have not already done so, please send in your financial contributions. Finally, David and Joannie Dunn are our Council's Pro-Life Directors. Please contact them if you have any questions or suggestions.
This month we continue our membership recruitment efforts. On October 8th we will be hosting the 11:15am Mass at John XXIII Catholic Center at the University of Tennessee. On this day, the entire Knights of Columbus Order will be celebrating a Corporate Communion worldwide! This will be a great opportunity for all Knights and their wives to come together in a spirit of unity and to help promote our organization. All Fourth Degree Knights are asked to wear full social regalia.
During the month of October, we will also actively be promoting the Columbian Squires. We will be conducting a signup for interested boys at both pancake breakfasts and at our appearance at John XXIII this month. Our Youth Director, Dan Hurley, has written an article for this newsletter. Please answer his call.
Finally, I wish to extend my personal thanks to all of those brother Knights who have attended and supported all of the activities that our Council has sponsored this past month. Our organization can accomplish many worthy goals if we have enough participation. If you have not attended a business meeting in a while, I am personally inviting you back. I promise you will feel welcome. If you have never attended a business meeting, please call me and let me know why. We currently have 124 active members. Only ten of those live out of the Knoxville area. Yet we have less than twenty members at our business meetings.

A sincere thanks to all members of Council 645 who have been so supportive and helpful to me during these first two months. I want to extend a special note of appreciation to Father Mankel, who agreed to serve as our Council's Chaplain for another term. Finally, I extend my deepest gratitude to members who regularly attend our business meetings.
As you can see from the Calendar of Events for September, our council has a lot going on this month! On Saturday, September 2nd, Council 645 will be selling hotdogs and cokes at Volunteer Landing. As the Vol Navy and wandering football fans pass by, this will be the perfect opportunity for us to raise funds. This program was put together by our Community Committee Chairman, Patrick Doyle. Our Council has the use of this facility before each home UT Football Game! Imagine the possibilities!
On Sunday, September 3rd our Council will be sponsering the 10:00am Mass at Holy Ghost Church. All members of Council 645 are requested to attend this Mass with your families. Space will be reserved for us to sit together in the front of the Church. Fourth Degree Knights are requested to wear their regalia.
This activity will be repeated at Immaculate Conception Church on Sunday, September 24th at 11:30. Both these events, and the final one at John XXIII on Sunday, October 8th at 11:15 are part of this year's Membership and Recruitment Drive. Please support our council by participating in these events.
Due to circumstances beyond his control, John Swindeman has had to resign his position as Recorder and Membership Committee Chairman. I have assumed responsibility for the Membership Committee. Additionally, Stan Metz has had to resign his position as Advocate because of his new job. We will be electing members to these vacated positions at the next business meeting.
Finally, we have our first Mentally Retarded Tootsie Roll Drive scheduled for Saturday, September 9th to be held from 9:00am until 1:00pm simultaneously at the Halls and East Towne Wal-Marts. Wal-Mart will match our collected amount up to $2000.00! Please come out and support our banner project.
