M.R. Drive

(Tootsie Roll Drive)

Your Mother Told You Not To Play In The Road...

The M.R. Drive is one of the highest profile activities of the Knights of Columbus. Each year we take to the streets on behalf of the metally retarded, petitioning passing motorists for donations and distributing Tootsie Rolls as a show of good will.

The response of the motorists is overwhelming. Contrary to some expectations, most drivers are more than willing to donate, and a few are deeply touched by our work on behalf of the mentally retarded. The gratitude of those motorists who have metally retarded children is the greatest reward for the work.

This year Council 645 mounted a record-breaking drive at several intersections around Knoxville. Aided by a small army of dedicated Knights, we collected in excess of $3500.

Proceeds are donated to the Sertoma Center.

Upcoming Drive (2007):

We will be raising money for the MR foundation on September 29th at Wal-Mart at East Towne Mall (Knoxville Center). The hours are 8AM to 8PM. We will need about 6men at all times. Let the council know when you will be available.

Upcoming Drive (2006):

The MR Drive is the biggest fund raising project of the year for the Knights of Columbus. This year we will be conducting the drive at the Clinton Highway Wal-Mart Superstore on the weekend of April 7-9. This is a great set-up, workers will not have to worry about dodging traffic and running down the road to find a restroom. If we can get enough workers we will have the option of collecting for the entire weekend. Coordinators for this project are William Smith, Jim Cortese, and Jack McCusker. Contact one of the coordinators and let him know your availability.

EVERY ABLE-BODIED KNIGHT SHOULD COMMIT FOR THIS PROJECT.

Past Drives:

We have our first Mentally Retarded Tootsie Roll Drive scheduled for Saturday, September 9th to be held from 9:00am until 1:00pm simultaneously at the Halls and East Towne Wal-Marts. Wal-Mart will match our collected amount up to $2000.00! Please come out and support our banner project.

This Year's MR Drive has been Rescheduled for Saturday May 6.

April 8th and April 9th are the next scheduled dates for this year's MR Drive. Please make it a point to keep these dates open so that you can participate in this worthwhile event. We plan to work three if not four intersections over this weekend. We need your help for good coverage. To this date, we have netted in the neighborhood of $1000 from our kickoff drive in October. We plan to work Chapman Highway at Young High, Merchants at Clinton Highway, Broadway at Cedar Lane, and possibly Magnolia Avenue at Prosser Road. Please contact me and let me know what days you can work. Thank you. - Stu Metz.
