History of Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge

Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge Tennessee
1946 --- 2006......and Continuing

The Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge was sponsored by the Downtown Knoxville Club in 1946.Organizing and developing the club was no easy task at that time. In 1946, Oak Ridge was still the "Secret City" and a great deal of red tape was required for anyone to gain entry into the city due to security concerns. In fact it was necessary to meet anyone invited to the meetings at the city "gates" and escort them in order for them to attend.

The first meeting was held at the Oak Ridge High School. Meetings were later held in theMayflower Grill, the Central Cafeteria, the Oak Terrace, the Alexander Inn, the Holiday Inn, and now are held at Ryan's Family Steakhouse at 6 P.M. on the first and third Tuesdays.

Membership was open to all persons meeting the criteria set by Kiwanis International. The club was very successful and by 1948 there were 75 members from X-10, Y-12 and K-25; the Corps ofArmy Engineers, Roane and Anderson counties and the various contractors who were doing work in the Oak Ridge area.

The club became the sponsor of Boy Scout troop 129 and at one time sponsored Girl Scout Troop 69, sponsored two baseball teams annually, sponsored KeyClubs, sponsored the former Atomic City Kiwanis Club and participated in many civic projects and activities.

Originally the club supported its civic activities by placing and servicing gum ball machines in various locations. The club also sold roses and had nationally known entertainers perform to raise funds to support their youth programs. A pancake breakfast is a recent fund source.
