Activities Report - Tom Salter

Litter Prevention

  • KKB provided 150 bags and 12 pairs of gloves to the Edgewood Neighborhood for a fall litter cleanup.

  • KKB provided 150 bags, 24 pairs of gloves and 2 litter pickers to Operation InAsmuch in the Fountain City area.  Results were 16 volunteers worked a total of 72 hours and picked up 52 bags of litter.

  • KKB provided 100 bags and 12 pairs of gloves to South Knox Beautification Committee.

  • KKB provided 50 bags and 24 pairs of gloves to the Cemetery Preservation Association for two litter cleanups.

  • KKB provided 30 recycling/litter bins to the vendors at the Brewer’s Jam sponsored by Community Shares.

  • Website pageviews for October 2005 were 6,668.  This is a new record and should be attributed to interest in the Orchids & Onions and the ads in the News Sentinel and Metro Pulse for our position opening.  Pageviews last October were 2,863.

Beautification

  • The Orchids & Onions Awards took place and appeared to be a big success.  This was the first time the event was held in the evening and the individual ticket price was raised to $35.  Major sponsors were also given a different role – to actually present the awards during the program.  That seemed to go very well.  Mostly positive feedback.

  • KKB staff had a meeting with Bob Santore of the South Knox Beautification Committee.  Bob provided KKB with his plans to spend up to $8,600 by spring 2006.

Membership

  • $95 in memberships were received in October.

Media

  • There were two articles in the News Sentinel about the Orchid Award and Environmental Achievement Award winners.

  • Articles appeared in the Halls News and Powell Post featuring the Beaver Creek Watershed Association and several Orchid Award finalists mentioned during the awards program.

  • Tom had a letter to the editor explaining how the proposed Tennessee Bottle Bill legislation will not have as great an impact on litter as proponents imply and that the bill will end the program that provides cleanup money to every Tennessee county.

Other

  • The annual audit is nearly complete.  Our auditor began right after Orchids and has made his office visit to look at our books.

  • Tom interviewed 4 people for the program coordinator position.  There were 3 strong candidates.  We have hired Jack Dennis who significant experience working with volunteers and managing projects.

Orchids & Onions Committee – Gary Loe

The was a general discussion of the positive outcome of the event.

Unfinished Business

There was no unfinished business.

Tom informed the board that he had been asked to present a program on litter survey data to a legislative briefing at the Rose Center in Morristown.
