Minutes for February 2006
Present:

Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by
Harold Byrd at 12:10. There was a quorum for this meeting (16/27).
Approval of the Minutes
Harold asked board members to review the
minutes from the November 2005 board meeting. Mary Lou made a motion to
approve and Sam Maynard seconded the motion. Approval was unanimous.
Presidents Report – Harold Byrd for
Cassandra McGee
Harold appointed himself, Cassandra,
Darrin Rhines and Tim Wheeler to the nominating committee. He reminded
board members that now it the time to make nominations.
A volunteer sign-up sheet was
distributed for donor phone banking on February 16th and 28th,
Dogwood House & Garden Show February 23rd through 26th
and the Women’s Expo March 10th through 12th.
Harold asked for any comments or
feedback on the January retreat. There were several positive comments
and a brief discussion on follow up on the covered loads problem with
area waste haulers. Terry made a motion that Tom set up meetings with
each company for a visit to discuss each company’s approach to the
problem. Sarah seconded the motion. Approval was unanimous.
Finally, Sarah made a motion and Dave
Collins seconded the motion to devote much of the April meeting to
discussing the issues raised during the retreat about O&O.
Executive Director's report – Tom
Salter
Tom presented the Financial Statement
and Summary for January 2006. A motion was made by Tim Wheeler to
accept the report. Mark Cawood seconded the motion. The January 2006
financial statement and summary were accepted.
Activities Report -

Litter Prevention
·
Staff prepared and mailed
a significant number of GAC sponsor appeal letters.
·
The Youth Advisory Board
began meetings for 2006. Schools represented include: Fulton, Central,
Powell, South Doyle, Webb, Catholic, West, Halls and maybe some others.
·
The Citation Initiative
Committee met. Martha Dooley and Chief Spangler represented the
Sheriff’s office, Capt. Gordon Catlett was there from KPD and Samyah
Jubran represented the DA’s office. The group was enthusiastic about
stepping up the number of litter citations and agree to do a press
conference sometime in the spring to announce a crackdown.

30 bags of trash picked up
in 5 small cleanups in South and West Knoxville.
·
Cash For Trash program
kicks off in South Knoxville.
·
There were 3,964 website
pageviews for January 2005.
Beautification
·
Tom represented Keep
Knoxville Beautiful at a TDOT public hearing on the Tennessee Roadscapes
Project.
·
South Knox Beautification
planted 2,500 bulbs and 50 pounds of wildflower seeds in January.
Recycling
·
KKB, Knox County Solid
Waste and many volunteers recycled more than 700 Christmas Trees during
the annual Tree-Cycling event.
·
Tom received a briefing on
the current state of recycling in Tennessee from Cat Wilt, a UTK
recycling expert and consultant to industry on waste handling issues.
Membership
·
KKB received $225 in
membership donations in January.
·
GAC sponsor pledges from
Waste Connections, Knoxville Coca Cola and Food City for at least
$2,000.
·
Cash For Trash article ran
on News Sentinel North Section on Jan 18th.
Media
·
Emily organized an O&O
interview with Tom on the WBIR morning show on 8/19.
·
Tom participated in
editorial briefings on litter study data and recycling with editors from
Bristol, Johnson City, Kingsport and Knoxville.
·
News Sentinel article
mentions KKB and Tree Cycling event.
·
Cash For Trash article
featured in South Knox Times.
·
WVLT covered Cash For
Trash kickoff.
Other
·
KKB registered for the
Dogwood House and Garden show and Women’s Expo.
·
KKB staff had a meeting
with Mabry Hazen representatives to discuss and confirm the space for
board meetings.
·
KKB’s interns began
working – Josh Fulton and Leslie Ham.
·
KKB held its annual board
retreat at the KUB facility on Middlebrook. Topics included 1) litter
issues, 2) Orchids & Onions, 3) what board members can do for a
nonprofit and 4) how corporations decide what nonprofits to work with.
Group leaders included John Evans of Knox County Solid Waste, Becky
Massey of Sertoma Center, Kim Trent of Knox Heritage and Diana Morgan of
the News Sentinel.

Seth Hopper of AmeriCorps
has been assigned to work with KKB through July 2006. He will be
working on GAC support and other projects.
Great American
Cleanup™
The kickoff has been set for March 7th,
2006 at Mabry Hazen House at 4:30 p.m.
Unfinished Business
Mark Cawood will contact the News
Sentinel to complain about the “free” newspapers being delivered to
houses with no residents.
New Business
There was a discussion of bottle bill issues. Dave Collins made a
motion that Tom draft some sample language for a KKB board statement on
the bottle bill, that it be circulated by email for comment and that
email voting be allowed. Tim Wheeler seconded the motion. Approval was
unanimous.
