Board of Directors, Regular Meeting

Minutes for October 2006

 

Present: Keith Austin, Harold Byrd, Mark Cawood, Ray Clift, Gary Drinnen, Anne Felknor, Maxine Gunter, Edythe McNabb, Darren Rhines, Sam Maynard, Doug McGill, Terry Faulkner, Sarah Surak, and Tim Wheeler.

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by Harold Byrd at 12:15.  There was a quorum for the meeting. 12/19 regular directors were present.

 

Approval of the Minutes

Harold asked board members to review the minutes from the September 2006 board meeting.  Tim Wheeler made a motion to approve and Gary Drinnen seconded the motion.  Approval was unanimous.

 

President’s Report – Harold Byrd

Harold reported that Keep Knoxville Beautiful has won a major national award from Keep America Beautiful.  We are receiving a Distinguished Service Citation (3rd Place) for overall performance compared to other cities in our population category (200,000 and above). 

Harold also reported that the annual audit will begin later this month as soon as Orchids & Onions is completed.


Executive Director's report – Tom Salter

Tom presented the Financial Statement and Summary for October 2006. Income and expenses are below the same month last year but we are ahead $1,137 on income compared to last year when we were behind $8,201.  Tim Wheeler made a motion that we accept the financial statement, Sarah Surak seconded the motion. 

 

Activities Report - Tom Salter

 

Litter Prevention

·       KKB litter prevention team worked at three UT home games with the “Make Orange Green” promotion to encourage and manage recycling and litter during on-campus tail-gatiing.

·       Eight students from 5 high schools have been recruited so far for the Youth Advisory Board.  The first meeting is set for October 24th (Tuesday), 4:30, Fulton High library.

·       KKB litter prevention team worked at the KKB/City/County information booth at the Pellissippi State balloon festival on the first evening of the event.  The second day was rained out.

·       KKB provided cleanup supplies to South Knox Beautification Committee, 4th & Gill Neighborhood and Green Magnet School.

·       There were 3,924 website pageviews for September 2006.

 

Beautification

·       Tom and Gary Drinnen identified O&O nomination prospects in North Knoxville.

·       KKB took several phone calls from Farragut residents regarding plans to remove trees along the Farragut Greenway for a utility line construction project.  Tom attended a public meeting on the topic.  Terry Faulkner was there on behalf of the City of Knoxville Tree Board.  LCUB has pledged to meet with every homeowner effected by the project and reach some kind of understanding.

·       The O&O committee completed their judging.

 

Recycling

·       KKB submitted a grant proposal to KAB national.  If funded, money will be used by KKB and partners to make Sundown in the City a waste-free event modeled on EarthFest.  The City of Knoxville has asked KKB to help make Sundown a waste-free event.

 

Membership

·       KKB met with Food City officials and arranged a sponsorship of the 2007 Great American Cleanup.

           

Media

·       News-Sentinel ran 4 ads for Orchids & Onions and 4 ads for the environmental achievement awards.

 

Other

·       KKB submits innovation awards application to KKB national on behalf of the waste-free EarthFest project.

·       The Environmental Achievement Awards judging is completed.

 

Orchids & Onions Committee

Tom presented the O&O judges slide show to the board.  Board members compared their picks with the judges picks.  After the presentation there was a discussion of the judges’ decisions and Doug McGill made a motion that we give the People’s Choice Award to FireDog Pizza/Deli.  Gary Drinnen seconded the motion.  Approval was unanimous.  There was a general discussion of board roles during the event.

There was no other unfinished or ongoing business.

§         O&O is banquet is Tuesday, October 10th, 6:30 pm

§         Youth Advisory Board, 2006-07 start-up meeting, Tuesday, October 24th, 4:30 p.m., Fulton High Library.

§         Next regular board meeting, Knoxville Coca Cola Training Room, 12:00 noon, Thursday, November 2nd
