Regular Meeting
Minutes for April 2007

Absent: Keith Austin,
Mark Brown, Dino Cartwright, Mark Cawood, David Collins,

Gary Drinnen, Ray Clift, Johnnie Conner, Stevan Curtis,
Neal Denton, Martha Dooley, Dave Hood, Cassandra McGee, Scott

Call to Order
The meeting was called
to order by Harold Byrd at 12:15. There was not a quorum for the
meeting (6/17 regular directors). We need 9 of 17 regular directors for
a quorum.
Approval of the
Minutes
Harold asked for
approval of the minutes of the March 2006 meeting. Sara made a motion
to accept the minutes, Mary Lou seconded the motion. Approval is not
official for lack of a quorum.
President’s Report –
Harold Byrd

Harold asked for a
discussion of new board members and appointed a nominating committee
of Tim Wheeler, Page Pratt, Ray Clift and Terry Faulkner. The
committee will meet at Shonos on Market Square on Wednesday, May 11th.

There was a general
discussion of board meeting attendance, participation in events,
etc. A short survey was circulated about ideas to improve
attendance.

Volunteer sign up
sheets were circulated for DWAF parade float construction, parade
participation, Sundown in the City, EarthFest and the Trash Bash.
Executive Director's
report – Tom Salter
Tom presented the Financial Statement and Summary for
March 2007. Income and expenses continue to be positive. Grants and
other income ahead of last year with the exception of memberships and
expenses are even with last year. There was no formal approval of the
financial statement due to lack of a quorum.

Litter Prevention

At the Mabry Hazen
House kickoff, volunteers moved leaves and collected 2 bags of trash
from around driveways up to the house. Those present included staff
Tom Salter and Jill Gilbert, interns Leah Festa and Katie Bennett,
YAB member Aftyn Behn, and board members Harold Byrd, Doug McGill,
Terry Faulkner and Sam Maynard. Community leaders included Mabry
Hazen director Calvin Chappelle, Mark Penland (TDEC), Bob Whetsel
(City of Knoxville), Linda Lee, Henry Anderson, “Lefty” Miller of
Edgewood, E.D. Hill of Cold Springs, Bob Santore of South Knox
Beautification, John Evans of Knox County Solid Waste and Janie
McDow and Ali Virtanen of AmeriCorps.

KKB participated in
the Williams Creek Cleanup led by CAC AmeriCorps: 27 volunteers
collected 5.5 tons, Dumpster #1 had 4,920 pounds, dumpster #2 had
2,290 pounds, tire dumpster had 3,180 pounds.

Booth at Women’s
Expo in Convention Center: ~10,000 attendees cam through 3 day
event. Spoke to people about the new state litter hotline,
EarthFest, Sundown and signing up for GAC. Volunteers included Anne
Felknor, Sarah Surak and her mom, Ray Clift, Mary Lou Horner, Billie
Solomon, Janie McDow, Jillian Gilbert, Stephanie Hood, Tom Salter
and Joyce Hausman.

Campus
Beautification, ~112 bags (12 recycling), ~100 volunteers (wore
StopLitter shirts)

Tom gave a speech to
the Knox County Republican Women’s Club – audience ~30.

KKB had a booth at
the Knox County Library’s Garden Fest on March 31, 9 am to 4 pm,
several dozen people stopped at the booth.

Continued to receive
GAC signups – more than 65 registered through March 31.
-
Chilhowee
Intermediate submitted their LFSZ documents and St. Joseph School
requested LFSZ forms.
-
KKB took part in the
EarthFare Environmental Event and distributed information on litter
prevention and GAC.
Recycling
-
Jill and Tom spoke
about Students for Recycling to assemblies at Chilhowee
Intermediate, Sterchi Elementary and Mount Olive Elementary.
-
Jill monitored waste
audits at Gresham Middle, Chilhowee Intermediate, and East Knox
County Elementary as part of KKB’s participation in the Students for
Recycling Competition.

Terry announced KKB will plant a tree in honor of Mayor Haslam’s
support of the 3rd Creek Greenway project.
