Board of Directors, Regular Meeting

Minutes for February 2006

 

Present: Harold Byrd, Mark Cawood, David Collins, Anne Felknor, Maxine Gunter, Darren Rhines, Susan Long, Terry Faulkner, Sarah Surak and Sam Maynard.  (*names in boldface are regular directors and count toward achieving a quorum).

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by Harold Byrd at 12:15.  There was not a quorum for the meeting (9/19 regular directors). We need 10 regular directors for a quorum.

 

Approval of the Minutes

Harold asked for approval of the minutes of the November 2006 meeting.  Sara made a motion to accept the minutes, Sam seconded the motion.  Approval is not official for lack of a quorum.

 

President’s Report – Harold Byrd

There was a brief discussion to follow up on the board retreat.  All comments were positive. 

 

There was a detailed discussion of committee appointments and first dates when committees would meet.

 

Committee appointments are the following:

 

·         Great American Cleanup™ - Terry Faulkner, Sarah Surak, Tobertha Anderson, Susan Long, Edythe McNabb and Harold Byrd.

·         Donor Phone Bank – Terry Faulkner, Darrin Rhines, Tobertha Anderson and David Collins.

·         EarthFest/Sundown Zero Waste – Anne Felknor, Terry Faulkner, Sarah Surak (ch), Tobertha Anderson, Susan Long, Maxine Gunter – 1st meeting set for March 15th, Copper Cellar, Cumberland.

·         Orchids & Onions – Terry Faulkner (co-chair), Sam Maynard (co-chair) and Edythe McNabb – 1st meeting set for March 13th, Chesapeake’s.

·         Summer BBQ – Sam Maynard, Maxine Gunter and Terry Faulkner – first meeting in May.

·         Tree Cycling – David Collins, Edythe McNabb and Maxine Gunter.

·         Good First Impressions – Anne Felknor, Terry Faulkner, Darrin Rhines, Gary Drinnen and Scott Frith.

·         Youth Advisory Board – David Collins.

·         Dogwood Parade Float – Anne Felknor, Terry Faulkner, Sarah Surak, Maxine Gunter and Darrin Rhines. Darrin will invite his brother-in-law, owner of White Lawn Care to work on the committee – first meeting February 27th at Copper Cellar Cumberland.

Executive Director's report – Tom Salter

Tom presented the Financial Statement and Summary for February 2007.  While our grant income was down compared to the same month last year, the YTD numbers are virtually the same as last year at the end of January.  There was a brief discussion of the balances for special programs.  The South Knox Beautification budget balance as of January 31 was $15,195.07. The board asked Tom to get a projected budget for expenses for this project for the next 6 months.  Sara made a motion to accept the financial report, Terry seconded the motion.  Approval was unanimous though unofficial for lack of a quorum.

 

Activities Report - Tom Salter

 

Litter Prevention

·         Two new interns have begun work on general GAC promotion and specific outreach to UTK students and student groups.

·         Website pageviews for January 2007 – 3,116

 

Recycling

·         Annual Tree-Cycling event took place at the Halls Convenience Center and Solway Greenwaste Facility.  More than 600 trees chipped at Halls.  Wolf Tree donated chipping.  News coverage in the Shopper and News Sentinel.  Pre-event radio coverage on 102.1 (live with Frank) and on the Phil Show (live 100.3). 

·         KKB participated in community computer recycling event at the Staples parking lot at Peters Road.  More than 1,200 cars came through and dropped off more than 16.5 tons of monitors, CPU’s, printers and more.

·         Stephanie Hood of KKB/AmeriCorps made two brief presentations to student assemblies at Pond Gap Elementary School, thanking them for participating in the “Return the Warmth” competition last spring and to remind them that the fleece jackets they received were made of recycled (PET) plastic bottles.

 

Beautification

·         Gary Drinnen and Tom met with State Senator Jamie Woodson to brief her on the Good First Impressions Project idea.

 

Membership

·         Corporate membership and GAC sponsor appeal letters were mailed.  $1,200 received by January 31.

 

Media

·         See reference in recycling section above.

 

Other

·         Annual board retreat was a success with 14 board members attending. There was an in-depth presentation and discussion of the Knox County Convenience Center cost control challenges led by Solid Waste Director John Evans and an in-depth discussion of KKB’s programs and projects for the coming year led by Tom.  Board members discussed the projects and signed up for committee work.

 

Unfinished/Ongoing Business

Tom reported that there were several school presentations related to the Return the Warmth competition held last spring.  A major presentation was held at Mount Olive.  KKB staff addressed student assemblies at Pond Gap.  The South Knox Times covered the event at Mt. Olive when students received their fleece jackets.  Representatives from Sam’s Club, Knox County Solid Waste Recycling and SP Recycling attended.

 

Tom reported that Keep Knoxville Beautiful picked up a major award at the KAB national conference in Orlando. Tennessee programs picked up many other awards.

 

Tom made a presentation to two sessions at the Keep Tennessee Beautiful/TDOT state conference on zero-waste events.


New Business
Tom reported that Keep Knoxville Beautiful has received two cash awards from Keep Tennessee Beautiful/TDOT at their annual state conference.  We received $1,000 for having the most comprehensive Great American Cleanup™ in the state of Tennessee and $3,000 for being the top KAB affiliate in Tennessee in communities with a population of 85,000 or more.
