Minutes for July 2007

Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Terry
at 12:15. There was a quorum for the meeting (13/17 regular directors).
Approval of the Minutes
Terry Faulkner asked board members to
review and approve the minutes of the June 2007 meeting. No changes
were made. Sam made a motion to approve, Sarah seconded, all voted to
approve.
President’s Report – Terry Faulkner

Terry presented a
slightly revised budget for 07-08 with an additional $720 per year for
internet service. Mark made a motion to approve the budget. Sarah
seconded, approval by all.

Terry asked the board to
vote for two new special directors, Calvin Chappelle, new executive
director of Mabry-Hazen House and David Nelson, a property manager for
KCDC. Scott made a motion to elect the two new special directors. Mary
Lou seconded the motion. Vote was approved by all.

A list was distributed for
board member volunteer sign-up for the new “Get Caught Recycling”
promotion
·
Sarah announced she will
not leave UT this year and will remain on the board until next year
Executive Director's report – Tom
Salter
Tom asked board members to review the
financial statements. The unaudited financial statement shows a modest
net of $2,176.31 for the 12 months ending June 30, 2007. This does not
include another $7,499 in grants receivable or any auditor adjustments
for funds received on this FY for last FY.

Litter Prevention
·
KKB continued to manage
litter reduction at Sundown in the City. At the last two concerts, with
crowds estimated at 3,500 to 5,500 people, amount of trash on the ground
was 11 pounds and 19 pounds respectively. City crews continue to report
that litter on the ground is a fraction of previous years.

KKB completed the litter
index a month earlier than last year. Board members participating
included Mary Lou Horner and Sam Maynard. We also had several community
volunteers.

KKB attended a news
conference on illegal signs initiated by County Commissioner Larry
Smith.
Recycling
·
KKB continued to manage
recycling at Sundown in the City. Starting with week 7, KKB and the
City have developed a system to measure only the waste created on the
square by the concert activity. Recycling rates have ranged from a low
of 69% of total weight on the site to as much as 77% of the weight. Sam
Maynard, Betsy Ford, Susan Long and Tobertha Anderson all stopped by to
check on the recycling project.

KKB provided volunteers to
do recycling at Saturday Night on the Square concert this year. 680
pounds of cups, cans and bottles were recycled. This is the first year
of recycling at this event.

Keep Knoxville Beautiful
provided some support for the Flag Day flag retirement program.
·
KKB received notice that
it will take lead on a project called “Get Caught Recycling”, a
partnership with Anheuser-Busch Recycling, the City of Knoxville and
Knox County. We give away 1,400 bins and more then 200 $20 Kroger gift
cards if we catch people using the bins to recycle.
Beautification
·
There were no specific
beautification activities in June.
Membership
·
There was one membership
donation of $60 in June.

Major article in the News
Sentinel on Sundown recycling results.
·
WBIR interviewed one of
our Litter Index volunteers and we had a nice story on the news.
·
The Metro Pulse covered
Sundown recycling in its Ear to the Ground section saying that in the
past Market Square looked like “Hurricane Budweiser” after the event and
are happy to see recycling opportunities.

Other
·
Keep Knoxville Beautiful
submitted its Great American Cleanup™ end of project report on time to
KAB.
·
KKB submitted a graffiti
abatement grant proposal to Keep America Beautiful.
·
Jill Gilbert’s last day
was June 21.
Orchids & Onions Committee
The Orchids & Onions Committee reported
progress. There was a discussion of board members responsibilities with
respect to table sales, ticket sales and finding quality nominees.
Unfinished/Ongoing Business
·
Terry gave an update on
several gateway beautification projects including Fort Sanders.
·
Tom reported that KKB will
be participating in a KAB cigarette litter prevention project program
during August.
New Business
·
Terry reported there was
a discussion at the Tree Board Meeting that KKB should take a greater
role in educating students about improving the urban environment through
tree awareness and litter prevention.
