Minutes for June 2007

Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Sarah
Surak at 12:15. There was not a quorum for the meeting (8/18 regular
directors).
Approval of the Minutes
Sarah asked board members to review the
of the minutes of the May 2007 meeting. No changes were made. The
minutes could not be formally accepted without a quorum.
President’s Report – Sarah Surak for
Harold Byrd
·
Sarah reported that the
Executive Committee met and approved the 2007-08 budget. It is similar
to last year’s budget and includes a modest salary increase for the
executive director. The executive committee is recommending approval of
the budget. The budget could not be formally approved without a quorum.

Board member Tobertha
Anderson announced that KCDC on Broadway has offered its training room
for our board meetings. We will have to order lunches as we have done
in the past.

A list was distributed for
board member volunteer sign-up Sundown Recycling and the annual Litter
Index
·
Sarah announced that she
has been accepted in a doctoral program at Virginia Tech beginning this
fall semester and she will be leaving Knoxville in August. She will
have to resign from the board at that time.
Executive Director's report – Tom
Salter
Tom asked board members to review the
financial statements. Monthly expenses for May 2007 were ahead of
income, but YTD income is ahead of expenses by about $6,000 and
approximately $8,000 ahead of where we were last year. The financial
statement could not be formally approved.
Activities Report -
Tom Salter
Litter Prevention
·
Jillian spoke to 2 classes
of Fulton High School seniors about litter prevention and took each
class out for a 45 minute campus cleanup.
·
Stephanie spoke to 2
classes at Northwest Middle about litter prevention.
·
Sundown recycling efforts
continue to make dramatic reductions in the amounts of trash on the
ground after the event. Public service workers continue to report the
litter after the concert is a fraction of what has been typical in the
past.
Recycling
·
The measurement period for
the national Students for Recycling competition sponsored by KAB, Sam’s
Club and Aquafina ended May 25th. We expect several schools,
especially Mount Olive and Chilhowee to be nationally competitive.
·
KKB continued to
coordinate recycling at 5 more Sundown in the City Concerts. Between
5-10 volunteers have been helping each week and collection and
measurement techniques have been refined. We are working very closely
with the City of Knoxville Public Works Department and this is a good
relationship builder for us.
Beautification
·
Terry Faulkner made a
presentation to the Fort Sanders Neighborhood Association about using
Civil War battlefield site preservation grants to possibly do a gateway
beautification project (First Impressions) on 17th Street in
the Fort Sanders neighborhood.

The Orchids & Onions
Committee met to brainstorm more sponsors,

May 11th – Tom
was quoted in a Knoxville News Sentinel editorial about urban blight
entitled “Blights, Eyesores Affect East Tennessee”.
·
May 31st – The
Knoxville News Sentinel ran a major article on Sundown recycling efforts
entitled “Recycling Efforts Not Wasted on Sundown Series”. High
recycling rates were reported.
·

reported by radio news on WUOT and News Talk 100.

Other
·
Amanda Turner and Rachel
Roberts began summer internships with KKB. Amanda (from Clinton) is a
Political Science major at UT and Rachel (from Knoxville) is an
Environmental Science major at Catawba College in North Carolina.
Amanda is taking off 4 weeks starting today and Rachel works for 9 more
weeks.

The 2006-07 YAB had their
final meeting at Fulton High School. They watched the documentary “An
Inconvenient Truth” and talked about improving their waste disposal
habits in the coming year.
·
Stephanie has taken a job
in Lake Tahoe and left the AmeriCorps program. Jillian’s last day at
KKB is June 26th. She will work her 2nd year with
AmeriCorps at the East Tennessee Clean Fuels Coalition.
·
KKB interviewed several
AmeriCorps prospects for next year. Ali Vertanin and Emily Nybo will be
working with us next year. Ali Vertanin just finished working with the
Ijams Nature Center Earth Flag Team for one year. She has a bachelors
in PR from Boston University. Emily Nybo has a bachelors in Psychology
from Maryville College and is a graduate of Farragut High School.
Orchids & Onions Committee
Orchids & Onions committee will meet
before the next board meeting and report at the next meeting.
Unfinished/Ongoing Business
There was no unfinished or ongoing
business.
New Business
·
Tom announced that KKB
will partner with the City of Knoxville to do recycling at Saturday
Night on the Town. Our role will be to recruit volunteers to set up and
take down recycling containers.
·
Keep Knoxville Beautiful
has been invited to participate in an Anheuser-Busch recycling bin
promotion involving Knox County Convenience Centers and City of
Knoxville Drop-Off Centers. At least 1,400 recycling bins will be
distributed in August for free at the 18 centers. Later, if people are
“caught recycling” with the containers they will receive a $20 Kroger
gift card. KKB will receive a grant of $1,200 for its management of the
project.

KKB has been invited to
submit a proposal to KAB for a graffiti abatement grant of $2,000. It
would fund removal supplies and some education awareness material next
year.
·
KKB has been invited to
participate in a KAB cigarette litter prevention grant program targeting
3 downtown areas. KKB will receive a grant of $2,500 to manage this
promotion.
