Activities Report - Tom Salter

Litter Prevention

·         Staff confirmed 13 contacts at Knox County elementary, middle and high schools to promote the Litter-Free schools program and Youth Advisory Board. Recruitment with schools has begun for enrollment in the Litter Free Schools Program. Used AmeriCorps network to establish contact in 4 schools.

·         Established contact with 5 UTK fraternity and 5 UTK sorority presidents to discuss partnering on zero-waste events. Attended two sorority meetings and spoke to audiences of ~80 each alerting them to the possibility of working with KKB to hold such events.  Possible future events include: War of the Wings, Alpha Omicron Pi’s annual game-day cookout, and Pumpkin Carve.

·         KKB staff met with twelve members from the university, Greek, and recycling communities to promote environmental awareness on campus with an event called Greeks Go Green.  This initiative will have litter-free and reduced-waste components.

·         KKB staff met with John Harris of CAC AmeriCorps; Jay Price, UT Recycling Coordinator; Micah Reynolds with KRC to execute a plan for a National Make a Difference Day recycling project focused on Fort Sanders.

·         Met with SPEAK, the University of Tennessee’s environmental organization and 2 introductory geology classes to recruit 58 potential volunteers on projects. Students are required to participate in 20-30 hours of service with a related organization as part of class work, and so far 8 have committed to events.

·         Tom and Representative Harry Brooks met with several sessions judges (Emery, Cerny & McGee) to discuss the new state litter ordinance passed in the last legislative session.  Following that meeting Tom and Rep. Brooks dropped in on Sheriff Jones and gave him a briefing on the new ordinance.  All the meetings were encouraging.
