Minutes for October 2007

Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Terry
at 12:10. There was a quorum for the meeting (11/16 regular directors).
Preview of Orchid Award Winners
Tom presented a
PowerPoint of the Orchid and Onion Award nominees and winners.
Basically the same show viewed by the judges.
Approval of the Minutes
Terry Faulkner asked board members to
review and approve the minutes of the September 2007 meeting. No
changes were made. Dave made a motion to approve, Tim seconded, all
voted to approve.
President’s Report – Terry Faulkner

Terry introduced new
board member Cathy Irwin. She is the president of the Historic Fort
Sanders Neighborhood Association. Everyone went around and introduced
themselves to Cathy.

There was a discussion of
the process for selecting the People’s
Choice Award nominees. During the banquet, four nominees would be
presented to the audience as nominees. The audience will choose the
winner during the program. The nominees are: Knoxville Botanical Garden
and Arboretum, Cascade Falls Development, Regal Riviera 8 and The
Seymour Volunteer Fire Department. Tim made a motion to have the
audience choose the winner. Edythe seconded the motion. Approval was
unanimous.
Executive Director's report – Tom
Salter
Tom asked board members to review the
financial statements. YTD income is ahead of expenses. Santore has
spent his fund down to about $8,200. Edythe Nelle made a motion to
approve the financial statement, David seconded. Approval was
unanimous.
Activities Report -
Tom Salter
Litter Prevention
·
Staff confirmed 13
contacts at Knox County elementary, middle and high schools to promote
the Litter-Free schools program and Youth Advisory Board. Recruitment
with schools has begun for enrollment in the Litter Free Schools
Program. Used AmeriCorps network to establish contact in 4 schools.
·
Established contact with 5 UTK fraternity and 5 UTK sorority
presidents to discuss partnering on zero-waste events. Attended two
sorority meetings and spoke to audiences of ~80 each alerting them to
the possibility of working with KKB to hold such events. Possible
future events include: War of the Wings, Alpha Omicron Pi’s annual
game-day cookout, and Pumpkin Carve.

KKB staff met with twelve members from the university,
Greek, and recycling communities to promote environmental awareness on
campus with an event called Greeks Go Green. This initiative will have
litter-free and reduced-waste components.

KKB staff met with John Harris of CAC AmeriCorps; Jay Price,
UT Recycling Coordinator; Micah Reynolds with KRC to execute a plan for
a National Make a Difference Day recycling project focused on Fort
Sanders.
·
Met with SPEAK, the
University of Tennessee’s environmental organization and 2 introductory
geology classes to recruit 58 potential volunteers on projects. Students
are required to participate in 20-30 hours of service with a related
organization as part of class work, and so far 8 have committed to
events.

Tom and Representative
Harry Brooks met with several sessions judges (Emery, Cerny & McGee) to
discuss the new state litter ordinance passed in the last legislative
session. Following that meeting Tom and Rep. Brooks dropped in on
Sheriff Jones and gave him a briefing on the new ordinance. All the
meetings were encouraging.
Recycling
·
KKB staff worked closely
with UT recycling coordinator Jay Price to recruit AmeriCorps members
for two Make Orange Green tailgate recycling projects. KKB staff
secured on-campus parking space for 8-10 volunteers for each home game.
Average recycled material collected weighs roughly: paper 350 lbs,
plastic and aluminum 1,500 lbs.

kKB and Pellissippi
State’s Phi Theta Kappa implemented an event recycling project at the
Pellissippi Balloon Festival, yielding hundreds of pounds of plastic and
aluminum over two days.
·
KKB loaned out 3 recycle
bins and drum liners to Greek Fest for recycling.
·
KKB loaned out 6
ClearStreams and drum liners to the Dumplin’ Valley Bluegrass Festival
for recycling.
Membership
·
No specific membership
activity.
Media
·
Revamped and maintained
the MySpace page for KKB. There have been 300 additional site views,
including 50 views of “The Adventures of KAB Man” video added to the
MySpace blog.
·
Designed a brochure to
give to students and teachers at events and meetings to summarize the
breadth of school outreach programs that KKB has to offer.
·
News Sentinel ran 2 free
ads for Orchids & Onions and 2 for the Environmental Achievement Awards
programs.
·

Other
·
Worked to gather Orchid
and Onion and Environmental Achievement Award nominee information.
Ongoing sign-up of nominees for tables at the upcoming awards dinner.
·
Ali and Emily interviewed
and hired a new fall intern, UT senior Joshua Roth, who works in the
office Mondays and Wednesdays as well as at various events.
·
Headed up first meeting of
the Youth Advisory Board committee, with three returning members. Second
meeting is scheduled for October 18th with heavy recruitment
continuing. So far five returning members and two new applicants have
been confirmed.

Ali and Emily established
and maintained an email address to record volunteer and outreach contact
info
·
KKB was a sponsor of the
Mary Lou Horner portrait, unveiled in September at the Halls Senior
Center.
Orchids & Onions Committee
There was a discussion of board member
roles for the event. Board members will help with seating, thanking
people personally for coming and making sure winners move quickly
through the photo process.
Unfinished/Ongoing Business
Tom reported on the high school
tailgating displays and that they have not turned out to be good ways to
reach young people. After 3 games, very few students were contacted.
There was a consensus that we did not need to continue the effort this
year but will look at it again next year.
New Business
Tom announced the dates of the KAB
national meeting and that KAB national has a new CEO.
