The results are in...the 2004 Great American Cleanup™ poster
contest entries have been judged and the winners have been
selected. We received 392 posters representing grade levels 2
through 12 from many schools. The theme was "Clean and
Beautiful Neighborhoods". We hung all the posters at our
Earthfest Booth and the public was able to vote on their
favorites. Yesterday we tallied the votes and then picked the
choices from each grade level. All the themes were related
to "Clean and Beautiful Neighborhoods", "Keep Knoxville
Beautiful", or various litter prevention images or
statements. These winners will be honored with prizes at the Trash
Bash, this Saturday from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at Volunteer
Landing. Knoxville Museum of Art has committed to displaying the posters on a
date to be determined. The first two winners are (from left to
right): Kelsey Christian, 2nd grade from Sequoyah Elementary School
and
Mandy Miller, 4th grade from Norwood Elementary:

The next two winners are (l-r) Nick Rhine, 5th grade from Norwood
Elementary and Rachel Barker, 6th grade from South Doyle
Middle:

The next two winners are (l-r) Tambera Hopson, 7th grade

Earthfest 2004
- Knoxville's official Earthday celebration
celebrated its 5th anniversary with a perfect event at World's Fair
Park. Event organizers estimate up to 10,000 attended the
day-long festival. More than 80 food vendors and display booths
were open from 10 am to 10 pm. There was live music all day topped
off by a solo, acoustic concert by national recording artist Shawn
Mullins. Keep Knoxville Beautiful had a
major presence at the event. The "Clean and Beautiful
Neighborhoods" poster contest entries were displayed - the
public voted on their favorites. Here are just a few pictures from
the event:

KKB director Tom Salter
participated in a panel discussion on non-profit management with a group
of UT students in Dr. Cunningham's
class. Topics ranged from marketing, how the board selects its
members, branding, and more. The coolest part was that Donna
Deichert from United Way was there. Tom knows Donna
from way back. It was fun.

Law Enforcement Day
and National Crime Victims' Rights Week was
recognized today at the Knox County Sheriff's Detention Facility.
KKB board members Mary Lou Horner, Page Pratt-Greene and
Martha Dooley
were present. Walker Johnson sang and played some beautiful
songs.

Detective Heather Gilbert was named officer of the year. Officer
Brandon Workman was named K-9 officer of the year, his dog Duras was
present. Officer Jeff Hinchey was named corrections officer of the
year. Picture below (l-r) are: Detective Gilbert, Sheriff
Hutchison, KKB's Tom Salter, Sheriff Hutchison, Officer Workman and
Officer Hinchey (who is holding Duras while Officer Workman plants his
tree).

Keep Knoxville Beautiful
participated by providing 3 bald cypress
trees and stone markers for 3 officers of the year. There was a
great turnout and it was a beautiful day. The plantings were at
the site of the 2001 Liberty Garden and memorial garden for Officer
Angela Payne.

KKB staff attended the second Cemetery Cleanup/Preservation meeting
hosted by Kim Trent, ED of Knox Heritage in the
morning. Tasks were outlined and plans were made to meet again and
break up into working committees. There was a consensus to
register with the State of Tennessee as a formal organization - right
after we figure out a name for ourselves.
In the afternoon, the Earthfest planning meeting took place
and everything is looking real good for the best Earthfest ever.
To get the latest information go to www.knox-earthfest.org
for a list of entertainers, children's activities, etc. KKB will
be responsible for managing the recycling and trash on the site.
If you want to volunteer to help, let us know by email.
There will be many thanks and maybe a free t-shirt or other promotional
item in it for you!

Speaking of beautification, the Public Building Authority
groundskeepers have done a terrific job with World's Fair Park.
The bulbs are spectacular! This is a shot of just a fraction of
the landscape between our office and the 11th Street Expresso House.

Tom made a visit to the Thorngrove Neighborhood Association
meeting behind the Orange & White Market near Thorngrove
Christian Church. Carolyn Cate, who works with former
KKB board member Mickey Mallonee will lead the group. It is
their first time with the Great American Cleanup™, but several
of the residents have been doing cleanups for quite a while.

No foolin...we're in the middle of cleanup season. April began
with a KKB board meeting in the Candy Factory where we discussed
a KAB national model program linking litter cleanup to
neighborhood crime prevention that could involve Knoxville.
After the meeting staff attended a regional Keep Tennessee Beautiful session
to help county solid waste directors to get more involved in KAB
activities including the Great American Cleanup™.
