What is a BLOG?

A blog is a web log.  For KKB it is a diary of the activity of our organization.

The Five Points Neighborhood
was the center of attention today with a groundbreaking for a new neighborhood grocery store and shopping center.  Long-time neighborhood cleanup leader, business owner and investor in the new project John Davis was there along with hundreds of other neighborhood leaders, VIP's and citizens interested in the future of this area.  Expectations are high for an economic and neighborhood improvement cascade effect from this development.

Oakwood-Lincoln Park Neighborhood
held its annual community day event today.  It was a lot of fun - good food, kids activities, clowns, live music, information booths, a helicopter, a fire truck and lots more.  Long-time City Council member Larry Cox was honored for his support of the neighborhood and his lifetime of service to the whole city.  Pictured below are just some of the VIPs present.  By the way - there was very little litter at this event.  Oakwood-Lincoln Park recently won the top neighborhood award from KKB for its participation in the 2004 Great American Cleanup™.

For the 3rd or 4th year, KKB hosted the "Trash Art" activity at Waterfest, a Water Quality Forum Event held at Ijams Nature Center.  Students from area elementary schools made a free-form "sculpture" made of creek cleanup trash and recyclables.  There were other cool activities - especially the water rockets.  Two liter water bottles with a little water in them are pressurized with a hand pump and then lunch about 50-80 feet in the air.  I really like that part.  Cortney Piper and Annie Morton worked with the kids on their Trash Art.  It was a lot of fun.  Here are some pictures from the event:

Don't Throw Down on K-Town...
Today we began a new 3-week radio promotion with WIVK and 100.3 The River called Don't Throw Down on K-Town.  If you have any ideas for spreading this anti-litter message throughout the community let us know and get a really nice free gift from Keep Knoxville Beautiful.  Here are some ideas for stickers.  What do you think?

It's May Day...
and the official volunteer appreciation party of the 2004 Great American Cleanup™ - the TRASH BASH.  Everyone had a GREAT time.  Everyone was there.  We had all the poster contest winners (see the April blog for names), volunteers from at least 25 of our cleanup groups, Mayor Haslam, Judge Rosson, Representative Hagood, School Board Member Dr. Kelley, County Commissioners Dave Collins and Mary Lou Horner and KKB Board Members Cassandra McGee, Jenny Raines, Edythe McNabb, Terry Faulkner, Susan Rudell, Martha Dooley, Harold Byrd and Tim Wheeler.  Other special guests included Allison Teeters, ED of Keep Sevier Beautiful and John Evans, Director of Knox County Solid Waste.  We had a great band called East Wind and MOST IMPORTANT, the whole lunch was donated by Mike Chase, owner of Calhoun's on the River.  As of Saturday, volunteer groups reported spending 7,452 hours picking up 123,780 pounds of trash.  The Court South Clean & Lean Challenge raised awareness about the personal fitness benefits benefits of picking up litter.  Using the "Get Moving Calculator" at www.caloriecontrol.org our volunteers burned approximately 2,548,584 calories - which we promptly consumed at lunch on Saturday.  Our apologies to Court South.  Anyway, here are the pictures from the event:
