The annual flag retirement ceremony was held at the Elks Lodge
on Lonas Drive today. Hundreds of flags had been
submitted for formal retirement. The pyre is prepared prior to the
ceremony. One flag is disassembled, stripe by stripe, while a
narrator reads passages about the the history of the flag and the 13
original states represented by the stripes. Finally the flags are
burned and the ashes disposed of properly. It is a very moving and
informative program and we recommend you attend next year.

The regular KKB board meeting was held at the Knoxville
Coca Cola training room today. The agenda included new board
member elections. We are pleased to announce the following people
will be joining the board on July 1. Individuals elected to new
3-year terms are Tobertha Anderson, Maxine Gunter and Dave
Hood. Elected to one-year special director positions are
Sharon Webb, Judy Newby and Anne Felknor. The board
also approved a budget of $82,670 for the 2006-07 fiscal year. The
new budget approves a relationship with CAC AmeriCorps to provide
two members for the Litter Prevention Team. Jack Dennis,
our current program coordinator had been scheduled to leave when the
contract with AmeriCorps begins but the board agreed to let him stay on
until he begins grad school or gets a new job.
