What is a BLOG?

A blog is a web log.  For KKB it is a diary of the activity of our organization.

KKB Executive Director Tom Salter
met with the nineteen member ‘06-’07 AmeriCorps class and presented information about upcoming KKB projects, encouraging the new class to become involved in litter prevention and recycling activities in Knoxville. The new AmeriCorps class is very enthusiastic to become involved in future KKB activities.  Jill Gilbert (below left) and Stephanie Hood (below right) were in the session.  Ruth Anne Hanahan of the UTK Water Resources Center presented just before Tom.

We did have the regular board meeting today.  Everyone was there.  We mostly discussed Orchids & Onions but also met the new CAC AmeriCorps litter prevention team members - Jill Gilbert and Stephanie Hood.  Summer intern Caitlin Campbell also attended.  The results of the annual Litter Index were shared.  There is a slight improvement overall from last year.  For a pdf file of the 60 sub-area results click here.  Here is a summary chart of the overall scores:

Jillian Gilbert
, an applicant for KKB's litter prevention team from CAC AmeriCorps was interviewed in person today.  Jillian had been interviewed by phone and this interview confirmed she will work at KKB.  Stephanie Hood had previously been interviewed and has accepted the KKB assignment.  Both members will be invited to the board meeting tomorrow to meet everyone although they will not officially begin for about a week.  We'll post some staff pictures when they actually start working.

Also, the executive committee met at Copper Cellar on Cumberland and finalized the agenda for tomorrow's board meeting.

The Orchids & Onions Committee met today at Chesapeake's.  Several sponsors are confirmed, nominations are coming in, the emcee is confirmed and we probably have the entertainment set up.  We discussed a pretty long list of judges.  The event is shaping up nicely.  Get your nominations in today.

Thursday, August 3, 2006

This is the first Thursday of the month and is the traditional date of the regular KKB board meeting.  However, there is something else going on today.  Today is election day in Knox County and there are 4 KKB board and staff members and at least 3 others working for other candidates.  Our board meetings usually have about 20 people.  This month at least 7 of them are campaigning today.  We voted in June to have the August 2006 board meeting the second Thursday of the month.  We may have done this one other time in the last 10 years when several board and staff members attended a KAB mid-year conference the first week of August.  In case you are wondering who is running and who is working for candidates here is the list: board member Gary Drinnen is running for State House of Representatives; board members Mark Cawood and David Collins are running for County Commission, and executive director Tom Salter is also running for County Commission.  Good luck to everyone.  See you at the board meeting.
